GeoHot donates remaining legal funds to EFF

The hacker has made good on his promises to his supporters.

In the wake of last week’s settlement, George Hotz’s financial saga has also reached is conclusion. The hacker has donated all of his leftover legal defense funds to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organization that defends free speech and privacy on the Internet. Hotz even threw in a little extra to bring the donation to an even $10,000, and he posted the screenshot to prove it.

“As promised, all left over legal defense money, plus a little to bump it to a nice number, has been sent to the EFF,” wrote Hotz on his blog. “Thank you all so much for your support, without it, things could have been much worse.”

Hotz added that he would not be tinkering with any other Sony devices, even in an anonymous capacity.

“As much as I don’t respect the goons at Sony, I do respect the court,” said Hotz.

Knowing how the legal system works, that’s probably a wise decision, and it’s an appropriate end to the saga. The donation dispels any concerns that GeoHot would use his legal funds for his own personal gain, and while the money may not necessarily be spent in court, it’s still going to be used to support digital rights.
