The Spengler family returns with its sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, bringing a spookier, chillier threat to the Big Apple.

Sony Pictures continues to lean into sequels that are more directly related to the original Ghostbusters films, with the return of Egon Spengler’s kids and their friends. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has officially dropped its full trailer today on the official YouTube channel. This fifth film in the franchise has a star-studded cast containing almost all of the original cast from the original Ghostbuster films, along with Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt joining the cast. The threat in this one maybe even more devastating and deadly, forcing the veterans to join the newcomers.

Paul Rudd returns from Ghostbusters: Afterlife to don the schoolteacher and leader of the Oklahoma Ghostbusters, Gary Grooberson, along with Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace coming back as the Spengler family. Even Celeste O’Connor’s Lucky Domingo tags along! The gang are all reunited in the iconic city that started it all: New York City. While Big Puff may not be the biggest threat anymore, a more sinister, colder threat emerges.

In this current timeline, the original Ghostbusters developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level! But when discovering an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, new and old Ghostbusters must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

This sequel will have the biggest ensemble of the franchise, as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts and William Atherton all reprise their roles from the original films. Based on the trailer, the OG ghost-busting crew appears to be prominently featured and integral to the main plot. It is also cool to see Potts’ Janine Melnitz suit up in the iconic suit, as she was always just the secretary. Also, making their return, fans can expect Slimer to be back in action.

As for the production side of things, Jason Reitman has written the film alongside Gil Kenan. This will be the first film in the Ghostbusters franchise made without the involvement of Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two films and produced subsequent films until his death in February 2022; Frozen Empire will be dedicated to his memory and celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ghostbusters (1984).

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will be haunting theatres on March 22, 2024.
