GoPro Unleashes An 8K Cinematic Camera Series: The Mission 1

Known for its action-focused capture, GoPro is now turning its attention to videographers with the Mission 1 series, 8K cameras geared towards professionals and content creators.

GoPro today announced its new MISSION 1 Series of cameras with the tagline: “the world’s smallest, lightest, and most rugged cinema cameras designed for any mission,” and three new devices are coming to the series. All three MISSION 1 cameras feature a new 50MP 1” sensor and the company’s new GP3 processor (which was unveiled last March), making these new devices more than just an adaptation to the formula.

The G3 sensor is a “5-nanometer System-on-a-Chip (SoC) that delivers more than 2X the pixel processing power and superior AI-driven image quality and low-light performance over its predecessor,” and it uses NPU technology to enable next-generation video pixel processing and low-light image performance.

The new series comprises three camera models: the MISSION 1 PRO, the MISSION 1, and the MISSION 1 PRO ILS. All cameras feature an interchangeable Micro Four Thirds lens system compatible with a broad array of lenses via adapters. Nicholas Woodman, GoPro’s founder and CEO, says, “Our most demanding, pro-minded customers have asked us for years to make this very line of cameras, and we’ve finally delivered. The MISSION 1 Series is built to withstand the most extreme environments our customers push them into. The footage is going to look amazing,” regarding the MISSION 1 series. Below, all three devices and their specifications are listed.

  • MISSION 1 PRO – The flagship offering, and it comes in a grip edition, a creator edition (literally including a better-to-grip surface, as the name implies) or an ultimate creator edition and features a 50MP one-inch sensor, the largest sensor in any GoPro camera thus far. The MISSION 1 PRO is capable of filming 4:3 Open Gate video at 8K30fps and 4K120fps. It can go further than that, with 16:9 video at up to 8K60fps, 4K240fps, and 1080p at 960fps (enabling a maximum 32X slo-mo). MISSION 1 PRO retains GoPro’s insistence on waterproofing and will hold a battery charge for up to three hours, provided there’s good airflow.
  • MISSION 1 PRO ILS – Has the same features as the MISSION 1 PRO, except it comes in a mirrorless form, and features an interchangeable lens mount that supports compatibility with many Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lenses and adapters, allowing a virtually “limitless range of lenses” to be paired with the camera. Whiel the other two MISSIOn 1 cameras are ‘waterproof,’ this one is touted as weatherproof.
  • MISSION 1 – The same as the flagship in nearly every way, but the base model is limited to 4K120 Open Gate video capture and 8K30, 4K120, 1080p240 16:9 video capture.

On top of the three new MISSION 1 offerings, GoPro has also unveiled a suite of accessories that can be utilized with the devices and look good doing it. The accessories are all compatible with all MISSION 1 series cameras. These include a redesigned MISSION 1 Media Mod, a Point-and-Shoot Grip, an ND Filter 4-pack, and Protective Housing that can waterproof the MISSION 1 or 1 PRO for up to 60 meters (196 feet). GoPro has even refreshed other accessories for the MISSION 1 series, with a Volta 2 tripod and battery-powered grip, an Enduro 2 Battery, Light Mod 2 (for better spatial LED lighting), and a vertical mount adapter for stationary capture.

Most notably, GoPro has revealed a new Wireless Mic System, a competitor to DJI’s lapel mics. Designed for easy pairing with the MISSION 1 Series, GoPro HERO Black cameras, 3rd party DSLRs and phones, this professional wireless audio system delivers 24-bit/48kHz audio and Dynamic Noise Reduction, keeping voices front-and-center in any setting. The mics feature a battery that doesn’t quit, with 6.5 hours per charge on a mic, and the charging case gives each device an extra life.

Pre-orders for the new GoPro MISSION 1 PRO and MISSION 1 will begin on May 21, with availability starting May 28. The MISSION 1 PRO ILS and MISSION 1 PRO Ultimate Creator Edition will be available on a TBD date at the start of Q3 2026. On top of that, the entire suite of MISSION 1 Series accessories will be available on a rolling basis beginning May 2026 through Q3 2026. GoPro will announce on-shelf availability as each accessory becomes available as consumers reach further into 2026. More information regarding any of the announced devices can be found on the GoPro website.
