QuakeCon kicked off with a bang this year, as iD Software and Nightdive Studios revealed a huge surprise — cult classic fantasy first-person shooters Hexen and Heretic are getting remasters. But perhaps the bigger surprise is that the dual-pack is out right now.
The Heretic+Hexen dual-pack is available now on all platforms, bundled together for the price of $14.99. Xbox and PC versions are also available on Game Pass. Heretic is a high-fantasy shooter made in the DOOM engine, and first released on PC in 1994. Hexen is the direct follow-up that was launched on Nintendo 64 in 1997. Both have gone down as tremendous cult classics.
The expert handles the re-releases remaster house Nightdive, a studio that’s been on an absolute tear lately with the likes of System Shock 2, Turok, Star Wars: Dark Forces, and more. As you might expect from Nightdive, these are much more than simple remasters.
The pack includes all content from both games, including Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, and Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel. They also have an array of new enhancements including,
• Online cross-platform and local split-screen deathmatch and co-op modes
• Toggleable enhanced soundtrack from Andrew Hulshult
• In-game mod support (Nintendo Switch™ only supports featured mods, curated by the team at id.)
• An array of accessibility options, quality-of-life improvements, and engine fixes
But the biggest, by far, is that there are two brand-new episodes included, co-developed by Nightdive and iD Software. These are called Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur. That’s a lot of content in a single package, and a great opportunity to experience two seminal shooters that have essentially been lost to time until now.
Heretic+Hexen is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
