A Piece of History

IMAX's New Film Camers, Used to Film The Odyssey, Named After David and Patricia Keighley

IMAX’s new, smaller and quieter film camera has officially been dubbed as the “Keighley.”

This name honours IMAX’s first chief quality officer, David Keighley, who passed earlier this year in September, at 77, as well as his surviving wife, Patricia Keighley, who currently serves as IMAX’s chief quality guru. David Keighley was a pioneer of large-format cinema and has been instrumental in the rise and spread of IMAX’s format.

Of course, you might also recognize the name from the pair’s son, Geoff Keighley, host and creator of The Game Awards and Summer Game Fest. In a post on X, Geoff announced the news, saying,

“There’s been a lot of well-deserved attention on my dad and his legacy this year, but my mom has been just as vital to IMAX since the very beginning — and she’s still hard at work there every day. As my dad always said, she was 50% of everything he ever accomplished. I know nothing would make him happier than seeing her contributions recognized as well.”

The very first film the Keighley was used to shoot is Christopher Nolan’s upcoming historical epic, The Odyssey. An adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic Odyssey, the film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, chronicling his long voyage home from the Trojan War. But Damon is also joined by an unbelievably star-studded cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

Just this week, Universal released a striking new poster for the film showing, presumably, Damon’s Odysseus from the back, with a golden spine attached to the back of his helmet. This coincides with a lengthy new look premiering alongside Avatar: Fire and Ash, with a nearly six-minute “prologue” showing exclusively in IMAX this weekend and next. One of our film writers, Shak Lambert, had this to say about the prologue:

The Odyssey arrives exclusively in theatres on July 17, 2026.
