Jim Henson’s legendary film Labyrinth might be coming back in some way, with the help of Nosferatu remake director Robert Eggers.
According to a new report from known movie insider Jeff Sneider (of The InSneider), Eggers is in talks with Sony and The Jim Henson Company to reboot the 1986 film. Eggers has found success rebooting Nosferatu, which recently released to strong reviews, so he may be the perfect fit for bringing back the bizarre world of Labyrinth.
It might just be the push that a new Labyrinth film needs, as this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Sony being interested in bringing the film back. There have been various plans over the years to try and do another film, but those likely shifted with the passing of David Bowie in 2016.
At one point, Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone) was attached to a follow-up film, but that seemed to sputter out. In October 2023 Derrickson talked to ComicBook.com and said his film was still in development, but he didn’t know its status, or if it would ever happen.
“We never got the script all the way to a place where the studio wanted to make it, but I was very proud of the work that we did on it. And it’s a hard, hard project to turn into something commercially viable, because it’s so imaginative and surreal that there’s no way that it can be done cheaply,” Derrickson said. “And at the same time, it’s so daring and different that it is a tough movie for a studio to feel competent that it has enough commercial value to earn a profit. So I think that it’s a tough nut to crack, but all I can tell you is I’m very proud of the work that we did on it. We certainly had a great film in mind.”
Presumably, Eggers being attached to a Labyrinth project would mean Derrickson’s version is now out, but we have no way of knowing until official confirmation.
Originally released in 1986, Labyrinth is about a 16-year-old girl named Sarah, whose half-brother Toby is whisked away by the Goblin King Jareth, played by Bowie. Sarah has to reach the end of an enormous otherworldly maze in order to save her brother.
Labyrinth is currently streaming on Peacock, Disney Plus, and Hulu.
