Why There Was Not A Lego James Bond Game 1

A pitch video for a Lego James Bond video game has recently surfaced online, reportedly dating back to 2016.

Lego Dimensions has been known to bring other IP’s to the world of Lego, such as Batman from his universe and Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings universe. Most recently, a teaser for an unreleased Lego James Bond game has leaked online. The teaser featured some iconic recorded lines from various James Bond films, along with notable scenes from the franchise. The trailer is still live, and several mirrors have been uploaded. Many of which have populated on Reddit.

Apparently, the teaser for an unreleased Lego James Bond game randomly popped up on Iinterni Gamer’s Discord server at 2am one day. Based on the leak, TT Games was considering a Lego-fied universe starring the legendary Bond character. Eurogamer was the first spot this strange leak. “This trailer got leaked surprisingly on my Discord server, and it’s an official trailer cause literally everything that appears looks exactly as the previous trailer but with final designs. Possibly its [sic] on reddit but [I don’t know] really,” wrote the uploader in the YouTube description.

The teaser showed that the game would probably cover numerous James Bond titles, showing off scenes from Live and Let Die and A View to a Kill in Lego form. The disclaimer states: “Confidential (TT Games Studio)—Not for distribution” for the entire minute-long runtime. R&D content only—not representative of any final products.” LEGOGameMuseum has added a little more context on the r/legogaming subreddit, too.

Why There Was Not A Lego James Bond Game 3

“This wasn’t actually for Lego Dimensions year 3 [as described in the reddit thread], it was produced as a pitch for The Lego Group to convince them to give the okay for a full game, it was made during the last year Dimensions was being worked on when TT knew Dimensions wouldn’t get a third year of content,” they wrote. Interestingly enough, they added how The Lego Group were ultimately not convinced that the James Bond world would match the audience of their brand.

“Once again, TLG decided Bond wasn’t suitable, and vetoed the project. I think this has been found in the data of a Dimensions build, which is where the confusion is coming from…This was around 2016, and LEGO specifically were not happy with the violence and sexual innuendo,” they added in a follow-up comment. This makes sense since there was one shot in the trailer where there was a Bond girl in a Lego bikini, a little to risque for a family brand. The other fact was that the James Bond villains had very inappropriate names like Pussy Galore and Plenty O’Tool.

LEGOGameMuseum went on to explain how TT Games Studio could have bridged the gap to make the worlds work together, so The Lego Group could potentially revisit the idea at some point later. For now, James Bond aficionados and collectors will unfortunately have to continue to wait on a Lego James Bond video game, and potentially a toy lineup. So far, only the iconic Bond Aston Martin car has been added to the Speed Champions line.
