Lex Luthor Actor Jesse Eisenberg Admits Playing The Role 'Hurt My Career'

This week, former Lex Luthor actor for Batman vs. Superman, Jesse Eisenberg admitted on a podcast that playing the role of Superman’s arch-nemesis may have hurt his career.

A lot of Superman information has come out this week, particularly that actor Nicholas Hoult‘s Lex Luthor has been revealed in the first teaser for James Gunn‘s Superman in the new DC Universe. However, as the teaser revealed what the new actor’s portrayal of the villain looked like, Jesse Eisenberg suggested that playing the role he played in  Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League may not have been the best thing for his career in an interview on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.

Eisenberg said “I was in this Batman movie and the Batman movie was so poorly received, and I was so poorly received,” continuing with “I’ve never said this before and it’s kind of embarrassing to admit but I genuinely think it actually hurt my career in a real way, because I was poorly received in something so public” referring to the popularity of the film, and how many people saw his portrayal of Lex Luthor.

Eisenberg then compares the role with other poorly received films by saying “I’ve been in poorly received things that just don’t see the light of day, and for the most part, no one knows. But this was so public, and I don’t read notices or reviews or movie press or anything, so I was unaware of how poorly it was received.”

Jesse Eisenberg’s reflection on his role in the previous Zack Snyder DC films comes at a time when the new trailer for James Gunn’s Superman has just been released, showcasing the future of DC heroes in film. Nicholas Hoult has been revealed as Lex Luthor, Hawkgirl is played by Isabela Merced, David Corenswet is Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan is Lois Lane, Edi Gathegi is Mr. Terrific, and all was shown in just one trailer. James Gunn has shown his inspiration for the upcoming film, and it spans decades of the hero’s storied legacy.
