James Gunn's Inspiration For Superman Spans Decades Of The Hero's History

In a recent social media back and forth, the head of the new DCU, James Gunn, replied to a fan who was asking for his inspiration on the new Superman film, and he provided some answers.

Although fans are still over a year removed from when the new Superman film hits theatres, that never stops the hype train from leaving the station early, that’s exactly what happened today when an unsuspecting fan took to the Meta Threads platform to ask Gunn what his inspiration behind the new Man of Steel film is, and he responded with a reel of images of Superman’s history, and answers that show the hero is in good hands.

James Gunn provided his answers on his official Instagram with a caption that reads “Someone on Threads asked what’s inspiring our #Superman movie other than the Donner films… but there are too many to count.” This is of course followed by his answers, which range anywhere from Max Fleischer’s 1940s Superman cartoons, to the Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? two-parter by Alan Moore, featuring the canine sidekick Krypto, and even the Silver Age “The Superman Family” comics were shown on the picture reel. With such a storied history Gunn is pulling inspiration from, it appears the new Superman: Legacy could be a potential celebration of everything Man of Steel related.

The new DC Universe film is titled Superman: Legacy and stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, including Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced and Nathan Fillion. Aside from the cast, there has been confirmation that the Fortress of Solitude will be returning (as filming has commenced in Norway), and the film has been given a planned release date of July 11, 2025, leaving plenty of time for more teasing as we get closer to launch.
