Little Nightmares Developers Partner Up With Epic Games for a Big Unannounced Project

On Tuesday, the developers behind Little Nightmares, now part of the Section 9 Interactive studio, entered a publishing partnership with Epic Games to make a new game.

Epic Games has announced today that they’re entering a new partnership with the independent developers behind the Little Nightmares series of games, Section 9 Interactive, to bring the studio’s next development to life as the publisher. The deal is simple: Epic will foot the bill on development and go-to-market expenses, and Section 9 Interactive (comprised of former Little Nightmares, Little Nightmares II and Little Big Planet VITA developers) will be allowed to focus on the important ‘development’ parts of the unannounced Sci-Fi action-adventure title.

Section 9 Interactive is an independent development studio based out of Malmö, Sweden that formed in 2020. Section 9 Interactive’s new, atmospheric sci-fi action game will be made with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 and will be released for PC and consoles.

Co-Founder of Section 9 Interactive, Gustaf Heinerwall says “Working with the Epic Games Publishing team has been an amazing experience for us,” continuing with “Ever since our first meeting with the team at EGP we felt that this partnership was a perfect fit for our studio. They’ve given us incredible support and the freedom to fully explore our creative vision, which is all we can ask for in a publisher. We are thankful for this opportunity and excited for what comes next.”

Like the previous partnerships explored by Epic Games with other developers such as Remedy Entertainment in 2020, Epic aims to have the most developer-friendly terms in the industry, so that creators can focus on making great games. Their previous model of 50/50% revenue share split and developers maintaining ownership of any developments produced by the partnership remains intact. Section 9 Interactive will also receive funding for development costs, receive go-to-market support, and retain complete creative control of their work.
