Metal Slug Tactics Devs Chat with Original SNK Development Team About Series

Let's Get Tactical!

METAL SLUG Creators Reflect On The Big Action Series While Anticipating Metal Slug Tactics

The development team at Dotemu released a new video diary today discussing Metal Slugs Tactics, and they were joined by the original SNK creators of METAL SLUG.

Since the announcement way back in the Nintendo Indie World Summer 2021 presentation, Metal Slug Tactics development has been moving along swimmingly, and fans have been treated to numerous trailers and updates from the team at Dotemu since. Today is a different story altogether: the creators of the high-octane run-and-gun series at SNK and the development team behind Metal Slug Tactics got together to talk about the series’ legacy and the hopes both teams have for Tactics in a video diary. The eight-minute video can be caught below, courtesy of Dotemu.

The video jumps straight out of the gate with both teams reminiscing about METAL SLUG, featuring original artwork and gameplay from the series’ inception. In a note of character, original developers revealed the idea to make the tanks feel more lifelike in-game was always the plan, and players would only be able to control the tank vehicle for the duration of gameplay; then the characters Marco and Tarma came along. The human side of the conflict then needed to be explored, doubling the workload for the original team and making METAL SLUG how fans remember it today.

What’s apparent from the diary is both Dotemu and Leikir Studios share a love for the series, and Metal Slug Tactics is meant to explore a new perspective on how the collaboration can advance the series in new and interesting ways while retaining the identity of the original titles. METAL SLUG Tactics seeks to deliver an authentic adaptation of METAL SLUG’s world while recalling series mainstay characters Marco, Tarma, Eri, and Fio with an air of nostalgia. The last title, METAL SLUG 7, was released in 2008 on the Nintendo DS and received a 70% on Metacritic to mixed critical reviews. That means there hasn’t been a new entry in the series for nearly 16 years.

The diary also revealed METAL SLUG TACTICS is coming this fall 2024, and it will be released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Steam. Fans can wishlist from Steam now, more information can be found on the official developer website.
