Max has released the first trailer for The Penguin, the spinoff TV series featuring Colin Farrell’s villain from 2023’s The Batman. You can see the full teaser trailer below.

This is the first spinoff for Matt Reeve’s Batman universe, with Reeves also serving as executive producer on the show. The Penguin doesn’t currently have a release date but is planned to premiere sometime in Fall 2024.

As you might expect, The Penguin revolves around the titular villain, and while we don’t currently have an official synopsis, the show will explore his rise to power in Gotham’s criminal underworld. Max describes the show as “the next chapter in The Batman saga from Matt Reeves.”

In The Batman, of course, Penguin was just one of a handful of villains the Caped Crusader faced, but it looks like the focus will be singularly on the gangers of Gotham this time around. The trailer makes it abundantly clear that the show will keep the dark tone of the film intact. It also features a lengthy monologue from The Penguin, layered on top of scenes showing the violent rise of the criminal. In a roundabout way, it almost feels reminiscent of one of HBO’s most important shows ever, The Sopranoes.

The Penguin, of course, stars Colin Farrell, as well as Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Micahel Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen. The series is written and helmed by Lauren LeFrance, who previously produced the 2013 series Impulse.

Alongside The Penguin a sequel film to The Batman is still planned and being directed by Matt Reeves. The film was originally planned for release in 2025 but was recently delayed an entire year to Fall 2026. At the moment, we don’t have any kind of synopsis for The Batman 2, although we do know Robert Pattinson will return as Bruce Wayne.

The Penguin will premiere exclusively on Max this Fall.
