Pokémon GO is looking to hit its tenth-year anniversary with a massive bang, premiering two Mega Evolutions for Mewtwo in July.

For those new to Pokémon GO, the game released as a mobile title in 2016, allowing players to take on the role of Pokémon Trainers as they roam around their surroundings to encounter wild Pokémon, participate in Gym battles, and perhaps one day, truly catch ‘em all.

As part of the Grand Finale to Pokémon GO’s in-person events, Pokémon GO Fest: Global 2026 will debut Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y. Running from July 11 through July 12, the event will, for the very first time, also be completely free. This provides players with several bonuses seen before, like access to Special Research and increased Shiny Pokémon encounter rates, but it will also help towards accessing those new Mewtwo Mega Evolutions.

Every Mewtwo already in the game will be able to Mega Evolve, but to get started, Trainers will need to earn Mega Mewtwo Energy, which Trainers can unlock by battling the new Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y in Super Mega Raid Battles. A Massive Mega Mewtwo Raid will also run each day of the event, where thousands of Trainers can battle a Mega Mewtwo together.

As a special feature of the debut, every Mewtwo caught from a Super Mega Raid will have at least one Mega Level already unlocked, and can Mega Evolve without using any energy.

The Pokémon GO Fest: Global will also update Pokémon GO’s Mega System, allowing Trainers to power level their Mega-Evolved Pokémon by using excess Mega Energy without waiting for a daily progress cooldown. For Pokémon with multiple Mega Evolutions, their level progression will be tracked per Mega Evolution, with Mega Levels carrying over for each separate one.

Before July, Pokémon GO is also hosting in-person events in Chicago, Copenhagen, and Tokyo. Trainers attending those events can access Mewtwo with Level 1 unlocked for Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y by participating in event activities.

Pokémon GO Fest: Global 2026 runs from July 11 through July 12. If you are interested in learning more about any of the upcoming events or want to try the game out for yourself, try checking out the official Pokémon GO blog.
