Rainbow Six Siege X Update Brings Massive Changes to the Shooter, Including Making It Free-to-Play

Rainbow Six Siege is about to change forever, as Ubisoft has announced the massive new update that makes the game free-to-play, adds new modes a visual overhaul, and more. Even the game’s name is being changed to Rainbow Six Siege X — and the enhanced version will launch on June 10.

This is, by far, the biggest update the game has ever seen, with a host of changes and improvement across the board, before you even talk about what’s new. Here’s a quick look at those changes, from Ubisoft.

  • Modernized 5vs5 Maps – New lighting and shadows, revamped destructible materials, and an optional 4K texture pack on Pc. Fives maps will be revamped at launch, including Clubhouse, Chalet, Border, Bank, and Kafe.
  • Destructible Ingredients – New elements and items that are destructible, like fire extinguishers exploding in a cloud of smoke that lingers, or metal detectors that can be interacted with and disabled with an EMP.
  • Rappel Navigation – Upgraded with new motion capture and fluidity.
  • Audio Overhaul – Complete rework of audio propagation and reverberation.
  • New Communication Wheel – To support non-verbal callouts and place pings.
  • Weapon Inspect – Get a closer look at your cosmetic customization in matches.
  • New Pick and Ban System – Meant to accelerate the process of Ranked matches.
  • New Tutorials – A new onboarding flow to help players master the basics.

But past those changes the biggest focus is Dual Front, a brand-new 6vs6 mode that takes place on a new map called District. In Dual Front, two teams fight to attack enemy sectors while also defending their own — and you’ll be able to pick from a curated roster of 35 Operators while playing it. During matches tow objective points are live at all times, one in each team’s lane. This means, for the first time, you can have attacking and defending Operators on the same team.

Of course, apart from all that the game will also change to a free-to-play model. Everyone with free access will have 10 Operators available at the start , and through in-game progression can bump that number up to 26. The free version will also let you play modes like Unranked, Quick Play, and Dual Front. Premium Access, on the other hand, will unlock Ranked mode and Siege Cup, if you’ve reached level 50, as well as access to more Operators. Anyone that previously owned Rainbow Six Siege will retain all previously unlocked content.

Rainbow Six Siege X launches on June 10 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
