Sonic the Hedgehog 3's First Trailer Gives Exciting Look at Shadow

Fans finally got a peek at the new Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer today.

Since Jim Carrey announced he would reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in February, fans had heard nothing. Yesterday, Paramount Pictures finally teased the first trailer for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer by posting pictures of projections of the iconic characters in the biggest cities in the world. Today, that trailer has arrived, and it can be seen below, marking the first appearance of Shadow the Hedgehog in the Sonic film series.

The trailer showcases a darker story for the anti-hero Shadow, as the trailer explains where Sonic found family and friends. While Shadow’s story began a lot like Sonic’s, he “found only pain and loss”. There also appears to be a human who has a connection to Shadow the Hedgehog in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer, which could be the cousin of Dr. Eggman introduced in Sonic Adventure 2, Maria Robotnik.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continues after Eggman’s defeat in the second film, showing what has happened to him since. Jim Carrey (as expected) reprises his role as the mad scientist, and in the trailer, he cackles while exclaiming, “If I can’t rule the world, might as well save it!” Shadow the Hedgehog is far too powerful for the Sonic Heroes team to handle (as is shown by the darker character giving the team a beatdown), so the team recruits Dr. Robotnik to help save the world. Shadow the Hedgehog is voiced by Keanu Reeves, and his voice can be heard in the trailer.

At the end of the trailer, it shows Eggman hugging what appears to be Gerald Robotnik also from the Sonic Adventure 2 narrative, so longtime fans ought to be happy with how the third film is shaping up. The trailer concludes with a remix of fan-favourite Sonic music track (and theme of Sonic Adventure 2), “Live and Learn” by Crush 40.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 lands in theatres on December 20.
