After decidedly retiring after playing Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Jim Carrey has returned for Sonic 3, and has now said he’s open to returning for Sonic 4.
In 2022 after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 landed in theatres, prolific actor Jim Carrey who played Sonic arch-nemesis Dr. Robotnik, decided to retire from acting following the sequel with a notion that he wouldn’t return to acting unless “the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink,” and a little time after that he was confirmed for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, due to the subsequent retirement, there has been talk on whether Carrey will return for Sonic 4 or not, and the short answer is ‘he’s open to it.’

In an interview with Japanese YouTube channel Cinema Today, Carrey has expressed he would be willing to return once again to don the mustache and goggles of Dr. Robotnik if there were a Sonic 4. The video opens up with Carrey saying “Instead of retiring I’ve decided to power rest between projects” addressing the retirement claims immediately in the opening minute. He then expressed admiration for the character of Dr. Robotnik, saying “I love the character, the way he’s evolving” continuing with “There’s always some new challenge for me” regarding the two roles he played in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
While these reasons could be the “golden ink” he referred to in his retirement attempt, when asked on whether he would be open to returning to the franchise he responded “I’m definitely open,” continuing with “I’m open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea, and if I go, ‘that sounds fun’, then I’ll do it. I don’t feel locked to anything in life, unless it’s something that interests me.”

Carrey then expressed admiration for everything Sonic the Hedgehog film-related with “I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans. There’s a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and the fans jump in and say, ‘how about if you do this?’ They’ve been super helpful. I think we’re all making this movie together.”
As of this posting, Sonic 4 has already received the green light at Paramount Pictures, and if the film “sounds fun” fans can count Jim Carrey in.
