On Friday, Nightdive Studios announced that their upcoming System Shock 2 remaster will be renamed to coincide with the series’ 25th anniversary.
Today, Nightdive Studios took to the internet to announce the upcoming sequel remaster of System Shock will be undergoing a name change. The title coined the name System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition back when it was announced during the live stream celebrating System Shock‘s 20th anniversary. Nightdive has decided to rename their second child before launch and introduce the newly named System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster to fans. The new remaster coincides with the successful (and well-received) reintroduction of the first System Shock, which was released for consoles and PCs in May 2024.

CGMagazine’s review of System Shock (2024) calls it “a premiere FPS narrative experience that shocks the player with each step” and Nightdive is likely aiming to let new and old fans of System Shock, the opportunity to see the sequel (and conclusion) with a fresh coat of paint like the original. The sequel embodies the same gameplay beats as the original, featuring a tense unnerving atmosphere while aboard a derelict space station in the year 2114. Players will tread the footsteps of an amnesiac unnamed protagonist exploring the station, but the caveat is a rogue AI, SHODAN, bent on the destruction of mankind has taken over and it’s up to the player to stop her in her tracks.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster will be released soon on PC, PlayStation 4|5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Fans looking for a precise release date will need to wait until GDC 2025 during the Future Game Show Spring Showcase live stream, where Nightdive Studios promises more will be revealed.
