The Inquisitor Gives A Deeper Look At A World Where Christ Is Vengeful

The developers over at The Dust have given fans a further glimpse at the world of The Inquisitor ahead of its impending release in February, and this time, Christ is Vengeful.

The Dust has given CGMagazine a look beyond the robes at their upcoming title, The Inquisitor, and fans have been treated to a different look at Jesus Christ. Based on the Polish inquisitor novel series by Jacek Piekara, and set in the 1500s medieval setting of Koenigstein, Christ the Vengeful takes the place of the martyr we all know and is shown in church glass window panes, and in many murals that paint the town. Christ in this universe has broken free of the cross and teaches vengeance instead of martyrdom, as is evidenced by the fearsome sword he wields in the many paintings. It’s safe to say Roman Catholicism is skewed differently in The Inquisitor.

Aside from Jesus Christ’s blatant differences that change the course of history, The Inquisitor inserts players into the capable shoes of Mordimer Madderdin, an Inquisitor sent from the church to investigate unholy happenings in the town of Koenigstein. With reports of vampire activity, it’s up to Mordimer to find clues, deal with small crimes, question people, and do honest detective work. This ultimately sends Mordimer on a chase to uncover what unholiness lurks beneath the facade Koenigstein delivers.

Mordimer has access to some useful abilities and tools to help him on his quest. Prayer mode is Mordimer’s Witcher Sense in The Inquisitor (School of the Cross meets School of the Wolf), and it will highlight useful items and clues that litter the landscape. Kalypso Media and The Dust go all-in on the detective-type gameplay in The Inquisitor, and while the studio is known for previous medieval titles like Dungeons, the studio’s show of commitment to such a different and compelling side of darker storytelling with narrative flair is a brave move.

Mordimer is Koenigstein’s law. Throughout gameplay, the player will be tasked with making decisions that keep Mordimer closer to faith, or descend him into darkness. As an officer of a church that now preaches violence, Mordimer will come across sinners he will have to judge, and it’s up to the player to decide which camp Mordimer falls into, the righteous or a tool of harsh retribution. The church’s medieval interrogation techniques are also on full display, allowing players to choose the path Mordimer walks.

In the last bit of gameplay, Mordimer was shown exploring what the developers call “the most dangerous place in The Inquisitor” the Unworld. The Unworld is an alternate universe that only Mordimer can travel to and from, which allows Mordimer to root out the evil in his target’s souls. The Unworld hosts some of The Inquisitor‘s most dangerous foes though, including a terrifying unbeatable sentry that appears inhuman which can spell the end of Mordimer quickly.

The Inquisitor is set to launch on February 8 for PS5, Xbox Series S/X and PC. Fans can head to the official website for more info up to the launch.
