On Wednesday, the studio responsible for creating Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was officially disbanded by Ubisoft, with its members reassigned to other projects within the company.
In response to a report published on Tuesday, Ubisoft confirmed the decision to disband the team behind Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. In a statement to Eurogamer, the publisher acknowledged the move but did not confirm any layoffs, stating that the team had been reassigned to work on projects like the continued development of Beyond Good & Evil 2 and “other projects that will benefit from their expertise.”

Initial reports released just yesterday suggested that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown would not receive a sequel due to the “restructuring,” but Ubisoft’s statement neither confirmed nor denied whether the well-received title would get a follow-up. CGMagazine‘s review of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown described it as “not just a good Metroidvania game, but a great addition to the catalogue of titles in the Prince of Persia franchise,” with the game earning an 86% on Metacritic.
Senior Producer Abdelhak Elguess expressed pride in the team’s work at Ubisoft Montpellier, saying, “I’m extremely proud of our team’s work and passion at Ubisoft Montpellier to create a game that resonated with players and critics alike, and I am confident in its long-term success.” He also confirmed that “most of the team members who worked on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown have shifted to other projects that will benefit from their expertise.”

Elguess concluded his statement by saying, “We know players have a love for this brand, and Ubisoft is excited to bring more Prince of Persia experiences in the future.” Whether fans will see another 2.5D Metroidvania Prince of Persia title remains uncertain, but at the very least, fans can breathe a sigh of relief that the team didn’t face layoffs this time around.
