Fear the Spotlight has an interesting background. Initially released in September of last year, it was pulled from the Steam store after receiving an infusion from Blumhouse and its new video game publishing arm. The game was re-released this year, now on consoles, with the addition of the second half of the story and more development time to QA some bugs. As the first of many games to be published by Blumhouse, Fear the Spotlight has garnered significant attention to set the tone for what to expect from Blumhouse’s gaming ventures. Cozy Game Pals has put their best foot forward, and the game has certainly piqued my interest.
Fear the Spotlight follows Amy and Vivian, who venture into their school library after hours with the intention of conducting a séance. What begins as a seemingly innocent exploration of the supernatural quickly turns into a terrifying journey, filled with haunting revelations about a school fire from decades ago. Unknown to Vivian, Amy has already experienced a series of unsettling events leading up to the séance, which culminates when they use a Ouija board.

The narrative weaves together themes of lost love, trauma, and the burdens imposed by parental and mentor expectations. The exploration of grief and the longing for connection is impeccable, making the emotional stakes deeply relatable. The story offers a nostalgic nod to late nineties paranormal tales, where mysteries deepen, and the emotional impact resonates throughout.
“Fear the Spotlight weaves together themes of lost love, trauma, and the burdens imposed by parental and mentor expectations.”
Fear the Spotlight opts for a hide-and-seek approach to encounters. I spent most of my time solving puzzles and exploring the richly crafted environment, with an emphasis on stealth and strategy rather than traditional combat. When the supernatural entities revealed themselves—each taking on one of four distinct forms—I had to navigate the school’s dark corridors, carefully hiding from their gaze. This created tense moments where planning, movement, timing, and stealth became essential in the incredibly creepy atmosphere.
However, while the initial encounters with these entities are genuinely chilling, there is a noticeable dip in intensity during the game’s midsection. The novelty of the Spotlight Man and the other forms begins to wear off, shifting the experience from a gripping thriller to something more monotonous. I found myself missing the initial tension as the pacing slowed, with moments of fear giving way to repetition. Fortunately, the final act introduces a more terrifying enemy type, reigniting the fear factor and bringing the experience back to its thrilling heights. This ebb and flow of tension is reminiscent of classic horror narratives, where the build-up is just as crucial as the climactic moments of terror.

One of the standout features of Fear the Spotlight is its atmospheric design. Set in a school during a horrific fire, the environment plays a significant role in creating a sense of unease. As I navigated through dimly lit hallways, shadowy corners, and abandoned classrooms, I was never quite sure what lurked just out of sight. The attention to detail in the environment is extraordinary—even the most mundane objects contribute to the eerie feel. Bookshelves creak, shadows dance on walls, and the echoing silence heightened my anxiety.
“The final third of Fear the Spotlight delivers some of the most disturbing moments I’ve encountered in a video game this year.”
As I explored the ruins of the school, I encountered ghostly grey figures that reminded me of children silently observing from the shadows, adding an additional layer of eeriness. This voyeuristic element created an unsettling sense of being watched, intensifying my unease and making my skin crawl. The feeling of isolation was palpable, drawing me deeper into the narrative’s emotional impact. Each encounter served as a reminder of the character’s struggles and the overarching themes of trauma and loss.
The developers of Fear the Spotlight, Cozy Game Pals, went to great lengths to ensure the player’s experience is immersive. The interactions within the environment are well-crafted, from unscrewing grates to carefully opening briefcases. Each action requires a level of engagement that drew me into the game’s world, making every moment feel significant. Having to physically interact with every item enhanced the overall tension, keeping me on edge as I navigated through the increasingly sinister environment. This level of detail created a more immersive experience, making me feel as though I was genuinely part of the unfolding story.

While Fear the Spotlight has its strengths, there are some technical issues worth noting. I encountered occasional clipping problems that detracted from the immersion. A particularly frustrating glitch occurred near the end of the first act, where the language unexpectedly shifted from English to Spanish to Russian during a text sequence. This caused a lot of confusion as I scrambled to reset the language in the menus, which are essential for navigation. These technical hiccups can momentarily pull players out of the experience, breaking the carefully constructed atmosphere.
“Fear the Spotlight is an impressive addition to the narrative-focused horror genre, offering a unique blend of emotional depth and supernatural tension.”
My initial impressions of Fear the Spotlight were mixed after trying the demo at Summer Game Fest. While the premise intrigued me, I found the early gameplay somewhat lacking in excitement. However, the full game far exceeded my expectations. Fear the Spotlight evokes feelings of discomfort and unease without relying heavily on gore or blood, showcasing the developers’ ability to create horror through atmosphere and storytelling. The narrative’s emotional depth enhances the overall impact, making the player’s journey feel profoundly personal and meaningful.
The final third of Fear the Spotlight is particularly noteworthy, delivering some of the most disturbing moments I’ve encountered in a video game this year. The pacing picks up, and the emotional stakes intensify as I was confronted with the culmination of Amy and Vivian’s struggles. The revelations during this segment are both shocking and poignant, leaving me with a lingering sense of unease that resonated long after the game concluded.

Fear the Spotlight is an impressive addition to the narrative-focused horror genre, offering a unique blend of emotional depth and supernatural tension. Cozy Game Pals has crafted a game that not only engages players through its immersive and eerie environments but also resonates on a personal level with its exploration of trauma and relationships. With its unsettling atmosphere, rich storytelling, and innovative gameplay, Fear the Spotlight deserves everyone’s attention.
