Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

Corsair has become my go-to brand when it comes to choosing keyboards, as they tend to feature designs that not only feel professional but also appropriate for both business and pleasure. The K70 Core RGB is no different and offers those looking to enter the world of mechanical keyboards an easy first choice.

The Corsair K70 Core mechanical keyboard is Corsair’s latest take on delivering a solid typing experience that offers enthusiast-level performance at more of an entry-level price point.

Featuring a full set of keys, the Corsair K70 Core utilizes pre-lubricated linear Red MLX switches, which offer a satisfyingly tactile typing experience that feels great to type on for extended periods. As someone more accustomed to typing on my trusty K63, which utilizes an older red switch set, in comparison to that, the K70 Core’s latest MLX variant has the same satisfying actuation feel or click of its predecessor, with a softer and subtle sound that puts it closer to an older spring style switch found in workstation keyboards.

In addition to the Corsair K70 Core RGB keyboard itself, users will have the option to purchase a model that ships with a magnetically detachable armrest, which my model did not include.

“…the Corsair K70 Core RGB mechanical keyboard is a solid product and an excellent choice for anyone looking to get a wired mechanical keyboard without breaking the bank.”

The Corsair K70 Core RGB keyboard, as the name may suggest, through its iCUE software, allows the user to change the lighting of the keyboard to anything they like through both custom palettes or pre-existing profiles, which Corsair refers to as Murals. All in all, the iCUE software was one of the better experiences I had, as far as easily tweaking and changing the settings of my connected peripherals go. If I had to nitpick, it would have been nice if the K70 Core featured onboard memory, as any custom RGB profiles take a moment to kick in upon boot due to requiring the iCUE software to be running in the background.

The reliance on iCUE also trickles down to the K70 Core’s media controls and dial, which default to their factory settings when not utilizing the software. Speaking of the extra controls, in addition to your standard keyboard offerings, the K70 features a multi-functional dial and programmable media keys, which can both be found on the top right of the keyboard. By default, the dial is used to control volume, but it can be changed through the software to do everything from changing the intensity of the backlight to acting as a zoom function toggle.

iCUE also grants the user the option to use assignments or key macros, which I found useful for creating a quick shortcut to toggle the HDR function on Windows 11 on or off, something I require when using my Quest 3 headset due to its lack of HDR support when using Questlink.

The Corsair K70 RGB mechanical keyboard is a wired keyboard, and although it features an adequately sized lead, the lack of a detachable cable is a little unfortunate as the otherwise sleek form factor encourages easy portability. Finally, it would have been nice if Corsair offered a TKL variant of the K70 Core. Although this is not really a point against the current model, but as someone who prefers the form factor of the K63 and smaller keyboards in general, the option would have been greatly appreciated.

Overall, the Corsair K70 Core RGB mechanical keyboard is a solid product and an excellent choice for anyone looking to get a wired mechanical keyboard without breaking the bank
