Brutalist Review Style (Version 2)

Getting decent Wi-Fi coverage in a home can be a challenge. Most houses aren’t designed with Wi-Fi signals in mind and sometimes this leads to issues. Fortunately, D-Link has heard your cries for a simple but powerful home Wi-Fi network and have released the Covr AC3900 Wi-Fi System. Promising seamless roaming and a scalable network, we took a look to see if D-Link’s new system stands up.

The first thing to note about the Covr AC3900 Wi-Fi System is that it is a combination of both a router and a range extender. Working in tandem, the two devices aim to provide your home with a whole Wi-Fi network that can handle all of your daily needs. The system features an AC2600 Wi-Fi Router alongside an AC1300 Wi-Fi Range Extender. Both of these devices output both a 2.4GHz signal and a 5GHz signal.

The AC2600 router has a 2.4GHz signal that can handle speeds of up to 800Mbps and a 5GHz signal that can handle up to 1,733Mbps. This means that the router is equal to a lot of other top brand routers currently on the market. The device features four LAN ports and a single WAN port. The exterior of the router features four antennas. The router features MU-MIMO technology ensuring that none of your devices get bottlenecked while simultaneously trying to access the network. Alongside that, the router features Quality of Service, Adaptive Path Selection, and Smart Band Steering. What that means is that if you aren’t sure what signal to connect to, the router has you covered. It’ll ensure that your devices connect to the right signal and that the signal is directed towards the device.

The other part of the dynamic duo is the AC1300 Wi-Fi Range Extender. The extender features two LAN ports, however the connection itself is not a true wired connection as the signal must still wirelessly connect to the base router. For just a wireless connection, the extender comes with two internal antennas. The extender does feature a discreet look that will fit right at home on a shelf or the corner of a tabletop. The extender is designed to seamlessly work right out of the box with the router, requiring no need to fiddle with settings. This means that all you have to do once everything is set-up is use your system the way you normally would. Since your network settings are shared across the router and the extenders you will never notice your connection dropping or need to reconnect to a different signal.

That is the strength and hook about the D-Link Covr AC3900 Wi-Fi System. After everything is set up, you should be in possession of a powerful mesh network. Unlike traditional router and extender combos, the Covr system aims to provide you with a seamless high-powered connection. As opposed to similar mesh networks, the Covr AC3900 Wi-Fi System is designed to bring a high powered connection to your home. This also means that should you feel the need to add more extenders to your network, as long as you use the AC1300 Wi-Fi Range Extender, you can add a seemingly limitless amount.

To aid you in controlling and maintaining this mesh network, D-Link provides users with an app for Android or iOS devices.  While trying out the app I was surprised by the extent that you could tweak your network settings. Of course, the Covr AC3900 Wi-Fi System does still provide users with a browser based interface that will keep any home network administrator happy.

The Covr AC3900 Wi-Fi System does what it promises to do. It provides a home with a strong mesh network that can easily handle a family’s demands. It provides this mesh network without the need for users disconnecting and reconnecting to different Wi-Fi networks within their homes. However, I don’t feel like this was designed for me. I don’t have a large enough household or home to truly take advantage of everything the network could do. For any users who are looking to provide their family with a strong and reliable network, or if you’re just someone with a really large home, this is an amazing system for you. Those with small families or homes don’t really require the range and power this device offers.
