If you have ever used a modern PC-based handheld device like the Steam Deck or the ROG Ally, you may have encountered situations where a dock enhances the experience. Whether you’re tired of holding the console or want to play a game where a larger screen adds to the enjoyment, docks can be incredibly useful. This is why, when CGM had the opportunity to preview the Razer Handheld Dock Chroma at CES 2025, we were impressed by what it brought to the table and how it delivered a robust overall experience. Set to launch later this month, this versatile device promises to provide a seamless bridge between portable and desktop gaming.
Out of the box, the Handheld Dock Chroma maintains the distinctive aesthetic Razer is known for. It’s a meticulously designed piece of hardware that addresses the needs of modern gamers while introducing a few design elements that set it apart from the many docks already available. With a fully loaded six-port configuration, the dock supports a wide range of connections, including USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and Ethernet, effectively expanding the capabilities of handheld devices and tablets.

The dock is solidly built, and its foldable design makes it easy to store in a bag or keep out of the way when not in use. Measuring 120 mm x 76.5 mm x 42.5 mm when folded and weighing just 240 g, it strikes an excellent balance between functionality and portability. I found it easy to place beside a monitor or TV without it causing clutter. The combination of polycarbonate and aluminum in its construction highlights Razer’s commitment to durability and quality. The dock feels well-made and capable of withstanding the rigours of travel and frequent handling without issue.
The Razer Handheld Dock Chroma features a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C upstream port with Alt mode for DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0. It also includes two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, an HDMI 2.0 port supporting up to 4K60Hz HDR output, and a Gigabit Ethernet port. These specifications ensure the dock can easily handle a wide range of gaming and productivity tasks. It delivers everything you could ask for from a handheld dock, packaged in a thoughtfully designed and well-organized layout.
The unified cable system simplifies the docking process, expanding a handheld or mobile device’s capabilities with a single connection. This includes a stable internet connection via the 1GB Ethernet port, video output through HDMI 2.0, power delivery, and connections for peripheral devices. The system makes the process seamless, giving any compatible handheld access to a variety of ports with just a single connection.

The inclusion of USB 3.0 ports further enhances the dock’s functionality, allowing gamers to connect essential peripherals like full-size mice and keyboards. This attention to detail ensures that users can enjoy a comfortable and precise gaming experience, regardless of their chosen setup.
I tested the Handheld Dock Chroma with a range of mice and keyboards, along with a TV and monitor setup, and all worked without issue on both the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally. It all connected as you would hope, with all ports being seen by both handhelds without any struggle with settings. It really acted as a plug and play device with any handheld you want to drop into the dock working by just placing it in and making adjusting based on the site.
“The Razer Handheld Dock Chroma’s focus on mobility extends to its functionality, enabling you to transform any space into a gaming haven…”
It is this easy adjustment that made the Handheld Dock Chroma one of CGMagazine’s Most Innovative at CES 2025: it was the adjustable hinge, crafted from CNC aluminum, allowing the dock to work with a range of devices seamlessly and easily. This design choice not only contributes to the dock’s durability but also allows for hands-free viewing across various setups. The solid frame ensures resistance to everyday wear and tear, making it an ideal companion for gamers on the move, all while making it so all handhelds from the Valve Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally X, and even the Lenovo Legion Go fit and work without any issue.

Even though the Razer Handheld Dock Chroma is solidly built, it remains highly portable thanks to its foldable design. Its lightweight, collapsible structure makes it easy to pack and transport, allowing you to bring your full gaming setup wherever you go—even internationally. The Razer Handheld Dock Chroma’s focus on mobility extends to its functionality, enabling you to transform any space into a gaming haven, whether it’s a hotel room, airport lounge, or coffee shop.
I tested fitting the dock into several bags, and it surprisingly fit well, even in my slightly smaller messenger bag—something I’m sure will please many people considering this dock for on-the-go use. You will still need to bring all the cables, but with the compact foldable size, it makes the overall experience easy, and I could see this fitting into a tech case with ease.
Even though it is portable, the Razer Handheld Dock Chroma is also designed to meet the needs of modern handheld devices, offering 100W power delivery and pass-through charging. This ensures that even while gaming on a TV or monitor, your handheld devices remain charged and ready for on-the-go use. It’s surprising that some docks don’t include this feature—after all, what’s the point of using a handheld with a TV or other device if it doesn’t stay charged? Fortunately, Razer addressed this potential issue, ensuring the dock keeps devices ready to go. However, it’s worth noting that you’ll need a charger capable of delivering sufficient power, as one is not included in the box.

The Handheld Dock Chroma is designed to seamlessly transition between three distinct gaming modes: mobile, desktop, and couch gaming, and in execution it all makes sense for a range of needs and uses. In mobile mode, the dock serves as a sturdy stand, enhancing comfort during handheld play. Moving over to desktop mode, it transforms a handheld device into a full-fledged gaming PC, complete with monitor, keyboard, and mouse connections. For those who prefer a console-like experience, the couch gaming mode allows users to connect to a TV and surround sound system for an immersive 4K experience.
True to Razer’s reputation for eye-catching design, the Handheld Dock Chroma features the company’s signature Chroma RGB lighting. A dedicated hardware button allows users to customize the lighting effects, adding a personal touch to their gaming setup. This feature is particularly noteworthy as it brings Razer’s iconic RGB customization to devices that may not be Razer Synapse-compatible.
The Razer Handheld Dock Chroma is designed to work with a wide range of devices, including the Razer Edge, ROG Ally, Steam Deck, and various tablets and smartphones. It was impressive to see the dock function flawlessly with such a variety of devices, allowing even smartphones and tablets to connect seamlessly and providing a more desktop-like way to interact with mobile devices.

However, despite its broad compatibility, the Razer Handheld Dock Chroma does not work with the Nintendo Switch. While it will charge the handheld—provided you have a compatible charger—it does not support video output. Additionally, the placement of the connector at the top of the dock makes it impractical to use with the Switch unless it’s positioned upside down, which is far from ideal. While this dock is primarily designed for PC-style portable consoles, it’s disappointing that one of the most popular portable gaming systems ever sold isn’t fully supported.
Despite my minor gripes and the lack of Nintendo Switch support, I believe Razer has delivered a dock that excels where it matters most. It provides a range of ports, a clean and simple design, Razer Chroma lighting, and an overall concept that makes docking your handheld effortless. It’s easy to overlook the small touches that eliminate hurdles in the user experience, but Razer seems to have nailed it, delivering a dock that hits all the right notes at a price that doesn’t feel unreasonable.
As more people turn to PC-based handhelds as their next gaming accessories, docks like the Razer Handheld Dock Chroma feel like must-have additions that expand the possibilities of these devices. It enhances what handhelds can do, introduces new ways to play, and extends the hardware’s capabilities. The Razer Handheld Dock Chroma delivers where it matters most and is a well-built product that meets or exceeds expectations.

While I would have loved to see support for the Nintendo Switch, what the dock does offer feels thoughtfully designed and solidly executed. For anyone who owns or is considering purchasing a modern PC-based handheld, the Razer Handheld Dock Chroma should be at the top of their accessories list.
