College Football is not a sport in most states, it is religion. When most churches open on Sunday, all the CFB faithful attend mass two days a week, with the Saturday rivalry game between Michigan vs. Ohio State being equivalent to a sermon.
It’s safe to say College Football is a big deal, and EA Sports have made it their mission to bring as much of the culture and games as possible to the gridiron in EA Sports College Football 2027 and with my small time getting behind the sticks, they have succeeded. EA Sports College Football 27 revamps all the game’s systems (including a complete Dynasty overhaul like Madden 27) and it’s shaping up to be the best entry in the franchise.
EA’s Blueprint To Dynasty
Before I get to brass tacks and how the game actually plays (spoiler alert, it’s good), I have to discuss the myriad changes coming to the gridiron for College Football 27 and it starts with a completely overhauled Dynasty Mode, and it’s called Dynasty Blueprint. College Football 27’s new Dynasty Blueprint system deepens program management to a serious degree, with playable NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) features, expanded coaching systems, Athletic Director Expectations (AD), and Dynasty Points used for upgrades like facilities, recruiting, and staffing.
AD Expectations and NIL Deals are incredibly important and lucrative to players on the real-life field, so the team at EA Tiburon pulled out all the stops to make it as true-to-form as possible, while placing emphasis on the ‘video game aspect’ of it all. You can get into the trenches during recruitment and really try to pull one over on the rest of the NCAA.
However, these negotiations could backfire, if you don’t have the budget to continue courting a top prospect, they will likely walk away from the table and feel jaded to the point of not talking to you again. Like with real life personalities, the athletes (or the smart AI inserted into the Dynasty Blueprint) will have a huge say in what happens and it creates an air of true importance around recruitment. The more gifted recruits can even decommit to your program (say, if the college facilities start to fail) and sign a more lucrative deal.

Your EA Sports College Football 27 budget comes in the form of Dynasty Points, and these are used to maintain the entire structure of your organization. Whether you’re recruiting players, scouting players, developing and recruiting coaches during a new feature called the Coaching Carousel, or even maintaining facilities, your budget is gospel to your program, and it will effect your strategy for incoming seasons. The Coaching Carousel operates similarly to how coach recruitment in the NCAA does. If you’re leading an organization as head coach and you’re constantly looking for new hires, the AI introduced by coaches will notice and get cold feet on signing with your organization due to your program’s pattern of assistant coach turnover rate. If you court too many for the same position at once and make too many promises, they will also turn their nose up at you.
No one wants to work for an organization that may fire them tomorrow, and Coach Carousel proves it by giving the highest rated coach recruits more agency over decision-making than the human controlled teams. This deep system goes down to the program you’re running and how their scheme fits with each play caller. EA Sports College Football 27 seeks to make Dynasty more intuitive and fairer, and Dynasty Blueprint is taking steps in the right direction. These CPU decisions happen in online dynasty as well, so humans can’t fleece brain-dead CPU teams for super powered teams any longer.
EA Sports College Football 27 didn’t just add a Coaching Carousel for recruitment, they added an entire Coach Mode, where you can be the coach of a CPU controlled team, and you must win games while conducting the players as if you were really glued to the sidelines. This mode can double up as a serious training regiment for the player to learn offensive and defensive schematics, and see what works in anxiety inducing scenarios. While I didn’t get any hands-on time with this mode, it sounds like a solid addition for those who want to run plays and not games.
Lastly, if your program meets the AD Expectations for the season (it could be something like remain undefeated for a season, or even winning four games), your budget will increase and for the next season you will have more dynasty points to play with.
On the flip side, if you don’t meet AD Expectations you could find yourself on the chopping block, or with less dynasty points than the previous year, which makes it much harder to maintain facilities and keep NIL players happy. You get penalized for poor performance in College Football 27, and it could derail your program’s effectiveness. EA Tiburon brought accountability to College Football 27, and it’s up to the players to strategize their way out with Dynasty Blueprint.
The Road To Glory Fully Travelled
First things first, players now have three new positions to drop into Road to Glory with: The Tight End, Safety, and Defensive Edge positions to hi the field with. The bridge between Madden 27 and College Football 27 is stronger than ever, and this year, a new Legacy Score system will track on-and off-field decisions that impact draft stock and reputation across both CFB 27 and Madden 27. This means accolades in your career as early as High School can be brought up (and matter) down the line.
A completely revamped player builder with flexible skill progression, physique-based caps and Max Potential points has also been stapled to progression in Road to Glory, giving players complete agency over how their positional star will develop. Hitting the books also matters this year, as academic probation could get you sidelined for some games. So, while training is all well and good, if your player doesn’t spend time dropping ink on pages, he won’t be able to drop back into coverage on Saturday.
History also plays an important part in your Road to Glory career. When transitioning to the NFL, your college status will apply toward your draft position. As if EA Tiburon was catering to all of the requests made for CFB 27, school history is sprawled out across the title, giving fans key insights on who won what bowl games and when, which athlete holds the program records, and most importantly, how good you have to be to be top dog in team history. Road to Glory has been hugely updated in College Football 27, and while I’ve skipped it last year, it sounds like a must try for CFB 27.
The Power is Yours
You can completely customize a team’s facility and even create your own in Team Builder mode. EA Sports decided to add a new Stadium Builder to the mode, giving fans the freedom to make their own with full customization. Being able to build your stadium isn’t new, but the developers have greatly expanded the feature, with more ways to customize your stadium and while listening to player feedback.
Now, players can select even small generic High School stadiums to kick off from, or massive mega arenas like Michigan Stadium to customize. This customization boils down to even fan customization in the stands, and even choosing and setting over 150 nicknames for the commentary team. Dynasty Blueprint lets you build a serious contending roster, Road to Glory lets you build a Hall of Fame athlete, and Team Builder lets you change the paint, so EA Tiburon has been listening to the fans. But how does it play?
College Football is Back, Baby
EA Sports tosses players in the deep end on the gridiron. Like Madden 27, CFB 27 has inserted new dynamic weather, so it can start snowing midgame (making it impossible to hold the lemon). You can also set gametime to prime time, making CFB 27 even closer to the real thing (not all games are played during the day). But like a poor conversation starter, the weather isn’t the most interesting thing to talk about.
I picked the TCU Horned Frogs and dove straight in against a friend at the Opening Drive event. The first thing that became readily apparent to me is EA Sports College Football 27 feels like what I would imagine Madden 27 would, if it was sped up by 1.25x. Where Madden 27 embraces strategy components of NFL play and audible decisions, CFB 27 feels like big plays rule the roost, which makes big play potential more exciting. Tossing an over the shoulder bomb to Jordan Dwyer felt seamless, and it feels damn good to pull off.
On the defensive side of the ball, you can make quick adjustments on the fly (like previous games) but it feels much more impactful this time around. You can literally pick and choose which player does what on the defensive side of the ball, and it feels phenomenal in practice. You can choose how far off or how tightly a CB plays an opposing receiver and choose whether you want them to favour an attack from the outside (by the sideline) or inside (running towards the center of the field) and if you choose correctly, it makes a massive difference.
You can do the exact same adjustment calls with the entire secondary in College Football 27. Like in Madden 27, College Football 27 also allows for general adjustment calls, allowing you to audible a MLB into a conservative dropback, which stops TE throws over the middle dead in their tracks. On the other hand, if you commit to this adjustment, your defense remains susceptible to big runs up the middle for a first down. The power of the entire game is behind the player (alongside the power to throw interceptions). This amounts to Football wizardry, and it responds well in practice.

If you’re playing Ohio State at home, and you’re on offense and they need a stop, the crowd will respond loudly and accordingly. On a huge 3rd down, my opponents home team crowd was deafening, and the screen shook so badly that it felt suffocating. I’m not sure if Jaden Craig’s recent transfer played a part in the screen antics (transferring in from Harvard), but the composure on the screen was hilariously muddy. When I tried to bring up my offensive play, the routes looked like a grade school child drew them with crayons. This must be what Sam Darnold meant when he said “seeing ghosts” back in 2019.
Although I played a fundamentally bad game the rest of the way, it’s apparent EA Tiburon included new interactions between players that make the game more realistic feeling, and more Football oriented than just chucking and praying for points (like a new WR/CB battle at the line of scrimmage). College Football 27 has a living, breathing system under it that influences gameplay, and EA Tiburon listened to fans who complained that game consistency was a huge flaw. The developers went back to the drawing board, and said “it’s your fault now” when you make mistakes, and I dig it.
EA Sports College Football 27 is shaping up to be a collection of improvements built both by the developers and the players. EA Sports made it a point to listen to the fans and establish new game functionality across the entire board to keep players in the game without frustration. New Dynasty improvements, Road to Glory, in-game functionality, Team Builder, and general gameplay improvements are just the tip of the iceberg. I played CFB 27 for approximately an hour, and the sheer number of additions and quality of life improvements are so numerous, I barely scratched the surface of what CFB 27 offers this year. When College Football 27 kicks off on July 9, I know I’m going to be at the season opener (or as other fans might say, church) for the start of the year.
