As part of their E3 program, Nintendo has showcased some epic Fortnite gameplay in celebration of the game becoming a member of the Nintendo Switch family. For new players who are just getting into Fortnite and love a game that can be played on the go, or from the comfort of their own bed, the showcase was only the beginning of their journey to victory.
First off, right when players jump into a game of Fortnite Battle Royal, they get the chance to make their first strategic decision: where they will land on the map. While there are hot spots within the different game modes, new players can improve their survivability by getting as far away from them as possible and start chopping down trees and stocking up on some good weapons and ammo. This is so when the time comes, they can have all the items they need for an epic dual.
Everyone starts off with a pickaxe to destroy objects. These give them resources to build walls, ramps, and floors, for example, which can all be used in variety of different ways like mobility and protection. So, for new players, understanding basic building mechanics like ramps to get around the map is a good starting point. Don’t forget to pay attention to fall damage — if players build too high up and fall, their health bar can take a hit. Fall damage was implemented in the game to make it a little bit more balanced.
New players should also always keep an eye out for treasure chests. They are not only located all around the map, but can also give out weapons, ammo, and consumables. These items are something in the early game that players should seek out. Since Fortnite has a rarity system, keeping track of this can be beneficial, especially when gathering loot and managing inventory.
For new players, they may also have an easier time in the 50 versus 50 game mode, as it gives them a bit more time to gather loot, and play a game where everyone isn’t out to get them. In the late game, however, chaos will ensure as combat is forced between the two teams in the middle of the map.
The showcase at Nintendo at E3 2018 also assured to new players that Fortnite is not pay-to-win. This is a huge deal to Epic Games, as they want cosmetics to be cosmetics only, and not affect gameplay. To Epic Games, it’s important to keep the competitive spirit of the game where the best player wins. This doesn’t mean cosmetics are meaningless, however, as they can add personal flair to characters.
Fortnite is made to be a light-hearted, fun experience. Players can be having an intense showdown one moment, only to be interrupted by another player “yoloing” through with a Shopping Cart! Since in every match, one person wins, Epic Games wants Fortnite to feel fun and for all its players to have a good time whether they win or not.
For now, Fortnite has embraced the Nintendo Switch, and is hoping to constantly update it like it does for the PC version. Team Epic is thinking of ways to make the game more meaningful for touchscreen users as well, and exploring this as something optional down the line.
A final, huge thing Fortnite wants to support on the Nintendo Switch is voice chat through the headphone jack, so players new and old can have fun communicating with their squad and get into even more shenanigans through teamwork. Near the end of the showcase, it was confirmed that voice chat may be turned on this Thursday morning.
