Returning to the seas, fans can rejoice as we finally got a first look at Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, a remake of the beloved 2013 title. Set to release on July 9, 2026, step into the shoes of the iconic Pirate Assassin, Edward Kenway, reprised by Matt Ryan, as the entire game has been remade in the latest Anvil Engine. With our first look into the remake, fans can expect new and returning features, shanties as they sail the Caribbean seas, an elevated storyline, and many more as they hunt for treasures and strike down the Templars.

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced Finally Announced, Launching July 9, 2026

Originally released in October 2013, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag follows Edward Kenway from 1715 to 1722, the Golden Age of Piracy. As a brash young captain, Edward seeks glory and treasure without a care in the world, eventually getting caught up in the ancient war between the Assassins and Templars. From being a reckless captain to a wise Pirate Assassin, explore the Caribbean seas and battle against other ships, fight alongside the legendary Blackbeard, wield many weapons ranging from Hidden Blades to dual cutlass swords, dive underwater to gather materials, hunt for rare animals in the jungle and seas, and much more.

Developed from the ground up in the latest Anvil Engine, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced is more than a fresh coat of paint, featuring high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting, detailed environments, a new dynamic weather system, expansive underwater exploration, and smoother access between cities and locations. Additionally, the combat system has been reworked to be more action-oriented. Like past titles, landing a perfect parry allows players to kill their enemies instantly, followed by up to four chained takedowns. Not to mention, players can utilize the walls and ledges to their advantage during their combat.

Alongside the reworked combat system, the parkour system has been improved to better support traversal in cities and the jungle, providing tighter control and speed as they free-jump, side-eject, and back-eject. In addition to the improved parkour system, players can now crouch freely to sneak and eliminate enemies with ease.

One of the biggest core features reworked in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced is the tailing system. In the original game, the missions would’ve been a desynchronization if the players were caught. However, in the remake, the objective remains active even after the player is caught, requiring the player to adapt to the situation to progress the mission. With the reworked tailing system, returning and new players will have more options for how they wish to proceed with their tailing missions without worrying about the automatic desynchronization if caught.

Sailing the Caribbean and battling ships, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced will feature more firepower upgrades for the beloved Jackdaw to overcome the many foes they will encounter. Alongside the upgrading of the Jackdaw, players will be introduced to three new officers, named Lucy Baldwin, The Padre, and Deadman Smith, each featuring unique questlines to learn more about their backstory, while offering useful perks when recruited. Additionally, returning officers will also receive new questlines, including Blackbeard and Stede. Lastly, players can recruit a cat or monkey to accompany them on their trips and enjoy listening to many returning and new shanties along the way.

During the interview featuring Matt Ryan, the original creative director, Jean Guesdon, and Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced creative director, Paul Fu, we learned that the team strives to maintain a faithful experience while adding new content to enrich the story. From what has been revealed, there will be a new scene centred on Edward’s Wife, Caroline, and moments from the modern-day story highlighting Edward’s internal struggles. Additionally, during the discussion about the new shanties, Paul Fu shared that the team will collaborate with Woodkid, known for Iron in Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, to create a reimagined track for the upcoming title.

At the end of the interview, Matt Ryan presented a first look at Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced Collector Edition, highlighting the statue of Edward Kenway sitting on top of a chest with the black flag waving. Alongside the sleek statue, the collector’s edition features Edward’s journal, filled with diary entries about his adventures, a brooch, a cloth map, and many more yet to be revealed.

Additionally, fans who pre-order any version of the title will receive Blackbeard’s Crimson Pack, offering an exclusive costume for Edward Kenway, a pair of swords, and a set of pistols. Depending on the edition the fans wish to purchase, each edition includes:

  • Collector’s Edition – On top of including everything from the Deluxe Edition, the Collector Edition includes Edward’s Figurine, Edward’s wearable metal brooch, an exclusive SteelBook, a cloth map, and more.

As a longtime fan of the older Assassin’s Creed titles, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced is looking quite promising, as the team has expressed that they wanted the experience to remain as faithful as possible while only adding new content and quality-of-life features that won’t stray too far from the original creative director’s vision.
