A second animated series based on an iconic video game franchise will be making its way to Netflix.
The producer of the upcoming Castlevania animated series has already announced his next project. According to producer Adi Shankar, Netflix’s second video game animated series will be based on Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed games. No major details about the project were revealed by Shankar. All that is known is that Shankar was contacted by Ubisoft and asked to develop an original story for the series.
Outside of the latest Netflix Castlevania series, Shankar is known for working on two adaptations previously. In 2011, Shankar produced the film adaptation of Another Man’s War, a 2009 non-fiction book written by Sam Childers. Titled Machine Gun Preacher. The film retells Childer’s story as he tried to save children of South Sudan again the LRA. Shankar also produced the 2012 Judge Dredd reboot, Dredd.
An Assassin’s Creed Netflix series won’t be the first time the franchise has been adapted into other forms of media. Last year marked the release of the franchise’s full-length theatrical feature. The Assassin’s Creed movie starred Michael Fassbender as Callu Lynch, a descendant of assassin’s throughout the history of the world. The movie featured an original plot, unconnected to Ubisoft’s games. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the movie grossed $240 million worldwide against its $125 million budget.
The next instalment of the Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Origins, is currently in development. The game is planned to launch October 27 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Assassin’s Creed Origins is set in early Egypt and will focus on the founding of the assassin’s brotherhood.
Adi Shankars latest work, the Castlevania animated series, will be available on Netflix in only a few days. The series focuses on the third Castlevania title, introducing Trevor Belmont as he continues his family’s mission of defeating Dracula. The Castlevania Animated series will release on Netflix on July 7.
