Catch Crunchyroll's New Shonen Anime Series Gachiakuta This Summer

Crunchyroll proudly announced their exclusive rights to stream the highly anticipated series Gachiakuta, which begins streaming in July 2025.

If there were not enough great Shonen anime series currently out there already, a new contender appears. Crunchyroll announced the next big hit anime in their streaming gallery will be Gachiakuta, based on the manga currently serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. Crunchyroll announced this week that they will be exclusively streaming the series worldwide (excluding Belarus, Russia, and Asia, but including India) in the summer of 2025. The graffiti-inspired art style and revenge plot-driven narrative is said to easily capture audiences, and manga readers are excited to see this come to their screens.

Gachiakuta is set in a dystopian world in a floating city where both trash and criminals are cast into an endless abyss. The main story follows Rudo, a young outcast framed for murder and exiled into this wasteland known as The Pit. After surviving his descent into this new world, he now must fight to survive against monstrous Trash Beasts while navigating a brutal world, hoping to return to his home and seek vengeance.

Crunchyroll’s Chief Content Officer Asa Suehira commented on the anime streaming platform obtaining exclusivity of streaming Gachiakuta, Gachiakuta stands out as one of the most unique shonen anime in recent years, blending intense action with a striking artistic style. Crunchyroll is proud to partner with Kodansha and Bones Film to bring this exciting new story to fans worldwide, exclusively to the Crunchyroll streaming service.”

From the studio that brought otakus My Hero Academia and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Bones Film is bringing the action-packed Gachiakuta to life. The anime will be led by first-time series director Fumihiko Suganuma (chief episode director and storyboard artist on Train to the End of the World). The series composition was written by Hiroshi Seko (DAN DA DAN; Chainsaw Man; JUJUTSU KAISEN; Attack on Titan Final Season; Mob Psycho 100). Satoshi Ishino (Date A Live; Tokyo Mew Mew New) will serve as the series’ character designer and chief animation director. The music for the series will be created by renowned composer Taku Iwasaki (Bungo Stray Dogs; Shin Kamen Rider).

The talent of the creators behind Gachiakuta clearly has no limits, and this series captures a whole bunch of them. It only makes sense for the manga that won the Global Special Prize in the Comics category of the Next Manga Awards 2022. The manga was written and illustrated by manga artist Kei Urana and graffiti artist Hideyoshi Andou, with serialization starting in February 2022. In terms of coming up with the concept, Urana noted how incorporating graffiti art would make it more interesting and enlisted the help of graffiti artist Andou.

Urana also shared his thoughts on the highly anticipated series, “I hope this anime stays in your soul! I’m looking forward to watching the Gachiakuta anime together with you all!” Andou added, “I hope the passion that Gachiakuta inspires reaches all of you! As you watch the animated Gachiakuta, I hope everyone feels the same spark of motivation!”

This is an anime series that hopes to grab viewers who are fans of revenge action stories like John Wick, The Rising Of The Shield Hero or Übel Blatt. Not only that, but the graffiti-like animation will hope to visually snare audiences deeper into this world—offering a distinct experience. Here is the official Gachiakuta synopsis from Crunchyroll:

“Crawl back from the abyss of Hell to change this lousy world!

Rudo lives in the slums of a floating town, where the poor scrape by under the shadow of the rich who live a sumptuous life, simply casting their garbage off the side, into the abyss. Then one day, he’s falsely accused of murder, and his wrongful conviction leads to an unimaginable punishment—exile off the edge, with the rest of the trash.

Down on the surface, the cast-off waste of humanity has bred vicious monsters, and if Rudo wants to have any hope of discovering the truth and seeking vengeance against those who cast him into Hell, he will have to master a new power and join a group known as the Cleaners who battle the hulking trash beasts of the Pit!”
