CD Projekt Red Lawsuit Over Cyberpunk 2077’s Rough Launch Settles for $1.85 Million

Original Suit Alleged the Studio Misled Investors

Two years ago a lawsuit was filed in California, alleging CD Projekt Red misled investors on the state of quality that Cyberpunk 2077 was in on Xbox One and PS4 consoles. Now that suit is being settled for a whopping heading.85 million.

The lawsuit alleged that last-gen versions (Xbox One, PS4) of Cyberpunk 2077 were “unplayable” at launch and that investors suffered financial damage as CD Projekt Red was forced to issue refunds to thousands of players.

Now, as reported by PCGamesN and Law360, CD Projekt Red will have to pay out the required amount to investors, but the studio won’t have to admit to any of the charges mentioned in the suit.

Shortly after the game’s launch, multiple lawsuits were filed against CD Projekt Red, and the payout of this lawsuit exactly matches how much the studio had to pay for another settlement in December 2021.

Cyberpunk 2077 had a tremendously tumultuous launch that, aside from these lawsuits, also resulted in the game being completely pulled off the PlayStation Store for months. It took 187 days for the game to return to the PlayStation Store, and in the years since launch, CD Projekt Red has diligently updated and patched the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 had an absolutely massive comeback in 2022, thanks to the release of the next-gen version as well as the smash-hit success of the Netflix anime Cyberpunk Edgerunners. In the week following the release of Edgerunners, Cyberpunk 2077 clocked 1 million concurrent players each day of the week.

In a report in November 2022, chief financial officer Piort Nielubowicz even said Edgerunners helped push the company to “the best third quarter in our entire history.”

Despite the lawsuits, this comeback looks set to keep going as 2023 will see the release of Cyberpunk’s first and only expansion, Phantom Liberty. At The Game Awards, it was announced Idris Elba will be playing a new character in the DLC, joining Keanu Reeves who’s returning as Johnny Silverhand.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
