Suicide Squad 'Broke' David Ayer, Director Explains In Surprising Interview

The Suicide Squad Director/Writer David Ayer took to the Real Ones with Jon Bernthal podcast to express his disappointment with the film and overall how it “broke” him.

While it is no secret that the 2016 Suicide Squad film was received as a mid-superhero movie chock full of villains with its poor 40% score by critics (59% by users), David Ayer was one of its most outspoken critics over the past seven years. David Ayer helped bring the film to life as the Director/Co-writer, and he has explained in a painfully candid interview on Real Ones with Jon Bernthal how the film’s theatrical release made him feel.

David Ayer has said many times that the theatrical version of Suicide Squad did not hold the film’s original vision, but in this interview, he definitely didn’t mince words. Ayer said, “Hollywood, I tell people, is like watching someone you love get f—— by someone you hate,” with “The big one is Suicide Squad. That shit broke me. That handed me my ass.”

Ayer has a directorial resume that includes many high-octane action films, including a credit as a screenplay writer for 2001’s The Fast and the Furious, which shows his brand stays steeped in drama. This is the initial vision he had for Suicide Squad, but Ayer then adds that after Deadpool launched and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice got “hammered by critics,” DC heads were “like, ‘Okay, we’re going to turn David Ayer’s dark, soulful movie into a f—— comedy now.'”

David Ayer also included a notion that his ‘Ayer cut’ of Suicide Squad may see the light of day after current DC Showrunner James Gunn told him it would “have it’s time to be shared,” while also stating Gunn “absolutely deserves to launch to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects.”

While fans can only speculate on the release of an ‘Ayer cut’ of Suicide Squad, looking at the full interview on Real Ones with Jon Bernthal may be a good idea for the whole context of Ayer’s statements.
