Summer Games Fest 2022 is finally in full swing, and Day Of The Devs this year gives fans a big insider look on what’s next for the Indie Game scene.
As Summer Games Fest 2022 literally and figuratively heats up, the Day of the Devs showcase outlines Indie Games that need attention for the upcoming year. For the 10th anniversary, the showcase helmed by Double Fine studios and iam8bit allowed fans to submit their own offerings to be premiered on the show.
With all of this excitement and appearances from easily recognizable gaming community figureheads, such as Tim Schaefer himself, Day of the Devs turned out to be an exciting montage of what’s to come on the Indie scene for the remainder of 2022, and possibly beyond. Without further ado, here’s what was revealed for Summer Games Fest 2022.
Day of the Devs 2022 Featured Games
Desta: The Memories Between – ustwo games
The world premiere of this title showed its ability to not only function as a semi sports, tactics, and roguelike elements as a genre crossing experience, but shared its heavier and deeper tones by being a commentary on social situations. The objective is to attempt to fix past relationships while possibly dealing with the main character’s regrets, in a turn based action system. The release date is TBD.
Time Flies – Michael Frei & Raphaël Munoz from KIDS
This whimsical little puzzle game from the makers of Plug & Play introduces gamers to a world where the player functions as a small house fly. While being a general commentary on the fleeting nature of life itself, the title contains many ‘objectives’ akin to Untitled Goose Game while on each very short ‘run’ of gameplay. Depending on where you live in the world, the life expectancy average of your location in years becomes the player’s timer until death, in seconds for the fly. Releasing in 2023.
Bear & Breakfast – Gummy Cat
Imagine running a bed and breakfast as a bear named Hank, and now imagine it’s an actual game, because it is! Hank and Co. find an abandoned shack and turn it into a money printing B&B, for tourists visiting their neck of the woods. There is definitely a more sinister layer to the tale, as is teased in the trailer, but fans will have to play to find out. Coming to the woods this Summer.
A Little To The Left – Max Inferno
This puzzle game asks that the player think outside the box, or even inside the box to solve whimsical little puzzles in an effort to advance progress. Occasionally, an adorable cat will come and knock things around as they are prone to do, and you’ll have to fix your work in order to continue.
ANIMAL WELL – Shared Memory
A pixel art Metroidvania fans dream title sees the traditional Metroidvania game aspects of discovery of new abilities to advance through the adventure, and defeat puzzles while overcoming enemies and obstacles. There are notable upgrades to the pixel art formula, such as water and lighting effects that build on the visuals of exploring the landscape immeasurably. ANIMAL WELL will release at a TBD date.
The next Day of the Devs title is a point and click puzzle game about living alone in a large city. By collecting spare bones and such from exploring the swath of urban sprawl, the objective to make yourself a companion to stifle the isolation and loneliness the protagonist undoubtedly experiences. From a one person development team, this title lands in August.
Choo-Choo Charles – Two Star Games
This cross genre title sees survival horror FPS, meet a demented cross between Thomas the Train and the Huggy Wuggy monster from Poppy Playtime, with a dash of the creepy spider legs. The objective is to upgrade the player’s yellow train by completing sidequests from townsfolk, in order to square up against the antagonistic spider-train Charles. Release date is still TBD.
Escape Academy – Coin Crew Games
Escape Academy was previously premiered back in May, and Day of the Devs showcased all of Coin Crew Games’ title, that features antics of a traditional escape room, but as a video game. Players can work alone, or cooperatively in order to solve the unorthodox puzzles thrown at them. With the latest showing of this novel title, the newly announced release date is July 14th.
How to Say Goodbye – Florian Veltman, Baptiste Portefaix, and ARTE France
Day of the Devs 2022 is the showcase of puzzle games with backbone, and How To Say Goodbye fits the bill. The title sees the player move tiles on a thoughtful board similar to a Rubix cube. The main objective is to meet and have ghosts move on to the other side. This ultimately allows them to escape from the grasps of an evil wizard, that just doesn’t know how to say goodbye. Out later this year.
NAIAD – HiWarp
A relaxing, ASMR feeling water adventure puts the player in the shoes of a fledgling water nymph. With many colorful biomes to greet the player, there are locations that utilize the water physics well, and the relaxing soundtrack rounds out the experience. Abilities will be key to advance in Naiad, and flowing through the game will be at the players leisure. Release date is TBD 2022.
Planet of Lana – Wishfully
Day of the Devs then greets players with the newest title from Wishfully. This side-scrolling puzzle game is soaked in gorgeous watercolour, and has a young girl and her loyal friend embark on a rescue mission through a world full of cold machines and unfamiliar creatures. There is a deeper narrative just beneath the surface, but fans will have to wait till later this year to discover more.
Roots of Pacha – Soda Den
Imagine taking Stardew Valley and inserting it into the Neolithic period of history, that’s where Soda Den went with their creation, Roots of Pacha. With farming sim mechanics, mining mechanics, and even romantic options, this is a survival Harvest Moon fever dream. Luckily for fans, a new demo is available to play now on Steam!
SCHiM – Ewoud van der Werf
You are a Schim, a shadow creature that adventures throughout the setting by platforming only using shadows to make their way to the end of the level. Schim’s move similarly to Splatoon inklings, being that they flop out of the shadows with similar animations. The novel platforming idea of jumping from shadow to shadow is expanded on by using the real world for the player to traverse. Release date is still TBD.
The first of two games on the Day of the Devs showcase introduced by Asobu — a community founded to support Japanese Indie Game development and distribution abroad — inserts the player into an action adventure game, with gorgeous art style, and neon lighting that echoes throughout the setting. While the release is still a ways away, there’s plenty to be excited about with the atmospheric 3D setting, and beautiful art style.
Goodbye World – YO FUJI
The second title introduced by Asobu during Days of the Devs, is Goodbye World another title developed by one person, is a story about two young indie game creators, that sees inspiration from titles like Mother 3. A puzzle platformer greets the player while following the two protagonists through 13 chapters of their story, displayed in beautiful pixel, with resolution close to the Super NES and Gameboy Advance. Due to release later 2022.
The Days of the Devs 2022 event closed out with showing off gameplay from yet another Indie game project in Kickstarter, Little Nemo and the Guardians of Slumberland – Peter Berkman of Anamanguchi.
This title plays similar to an action adventure Metroidvania title, and features an immersive soundtrack with a cartoon-like art style of the main character adventuring in a onesie. Fans interested in this project can swing over to Kickstarter for more information regarding this ambitious title.
Another surprising announcement, is Annapurna Interactive, the studio responsible for titles such as The Artful Escape, is having a full blown showcase set to launch on July 28th.
