Deadpool may not have been widely heard of before his movie, but his popularity has skyrocketed since Fox’s adaptation of the Merc with a Mouth. The film has surpassed the previous record holder, The Matrix Reloaded’s $742 million with its current worldwide box office earnings sitting at $745 million. This makes Deadpool the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
Deadpool also claimed the record for the biggest R-rated opening weekend with a global opening of $260 million. The film was estimated to rake in somewhere between $65 and $70 million in its opening weekend. On top of Deadpool’s commercial success, it has been met with tons of praise from critics and movie-goers alike.
Given its success, Fox has already given the go-ahead on Deadpool 2.
