Destiny 2: The Final Shape Reveals Keith David As Commander Zavala For The 1st Time

Lance Reddick, who previously voiced the character Commander Zavala, sadly passed away last March, and today, Destiny 2: The Final Shape has given fans a listen of Keith David in the role.

Since Reddick’s passing, Bungie has since revealed Commander Zavala will be voiced by Keith David and today, the latest tease for Destiny 2: The Final Shape revealed on X (formerly Twitter) has revealed the new pipes of the fearless commander. This incredibly brief peek comes from a Destiny 2 ViDoc earlier today, which is nine minutes in length, but the highlight is where Zavala appears and delivers David’s first lines in the role. That small snippet can be seen below amid the ViDoc.

Commander Zavala can be seen stating, “I won’t lose another soldier in this war,” around the 9:01 mark, among the first lines David has delivered as the iconic character. Lance Reddick has played the character since he was introduced in Destiny 2 back in 2017. Since then, he has been a fan-favourite character and has been a staple figure in the Vanguard figurehead for the past seven years in Destiny 2 lore. It’s safe to say the character is a big deal. Keith David himself understood the importance of Commander Zavala and Lance Reddick, and posted on X with his thoughts back when he was announced as the new commander in August 2023.

David said back in August, “One of the great qualities of Zavala that really attracts me is his integrity and sense of family. I thought Lance captured that wonderfully, and it is my intention to continue that work and to continue to bring that kind of integrity to all the fans.”
With that in mind, fans won’t have to wait much longer on Destiny 2: The Final Shape expansion, as there are now only 11 days left before guardians bring the fight to The Witness.
