Popular 90s Cartoon Doug Is Set To Return With A Sequel

Creator Jim Jinkins revealed that he has developed a sequel structure for the 1991 cartoon Doug, and it takes place after the cast is grown up.

Although the original 90s cartoon Doug was initially created for Nickelodeon in 1991, the series has seen a second airing on NickRewind and even received an animated feature film in 1999. Creator Jim Jinkins came out swinging in an interview on the YouTube Channel Tenn Buick with news of a potential future for the popular 90s cartoon. He’s developing a sequel series that takes place years into the future from when the cartoon first aired, and it was to hopefully spurn a green light out of Disney, who currently holds the copyright to Doug. The full interview can be seen below, and it stands at 65 minutes long.

Jinkins reveals in the interview the project is currently called Doug Kids, which focuses on the future of the main cast of the show. It is about adult versions of Skeeter, Roger, Beebe, Judy, Chalky, and, of course, the titular character himself and Patty Mayonnaise, who appears to be married with kids. Jinkins says, “Doug is 33 years old — the fans of Doug have grown up, maybe some of them have gotten married, maybe some of them have kids. The idea of bringing Doug back now has real power in it,” regarding the potential return of the cartoon.

Jinkins has gone above and beyond with the sequel, even sharing that he has a storyboard complete with character names and a drawing of the full cast fully adult. Jinkins holds up a photo of the cast and how they appear in their adult bodies, and he says, “It would be a way to have the kids here (while pointing to kids of the original cast) be the stars of the show, but they’re all still there!” when referring to the photo of the original cast.

While Jinkins appears to have a sound story structure in place, the interview above took place five months ago, and while social media has recently gotten fired up about this interview, no updates have been announced since.
