Microsoft addressed issues with certain Ubisoft games not working with the latest Windows 11 update, still working on a solid fix.

The latest Windows 11 update, 24H2, has been causing gamers some major issues. Today, Microsoft acknowledged this latest major Windows update has stopped certain Ubisoft games from working. According to Microsoft, games like Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla are some of the ones being affected. This is the third major update to Windows 11 since the OS was released three years ago.

So far, Microsoft has blocked the Windows upgrade for some while also releasing a warning not to manually install the Windows update if players own these games. “We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update to version 24H2 using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or the media creation tool until this issue has been resolved,” Microsoft explained.

“After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might encounter issues with some Ubisoft games,” a message on its support site reads. “These games might become unresponsive while starting, loading, or during active gameplay. In some cases, users might receive a black screen. ” Here is a full list of Ubisoft games affected by the update:

Microsoft has issued a “temporary mitigation” for Star Wars Outlaws, which should prevent the game from failing and stop responding. It did note there may still be performance issues. Microsoft is currently working on a fix with Ubisoft, promising more information when the companies know more. In the meantime, it has provided the following workaround for users who find a game stops responding to their demands. As noted on the Microsoft support page, here is a detailed breakdown of a temporary workaround for users who find a game stops responding:

  1. Open Task Manager. This can be accomplished by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can right-click on the Start button and select Task Manager from the menu.
  2. In the Task Manager window, look for your game in the Processes tab. It might be listed under the name of the game or the game launcher.
  3. Click on the game’s name to highlight it. Then, click the End Task button at the bottom right of the window. This will close the game.

The issues began to get flagged as players with access to the update have been noting for some time—particularly those who’ve had preview access since the summer—that some Ubisoft games no longer work with the new update installed. “We have just deployed a temporary hotfix (v1.4.1) for players who were experiencing issues playing on Windows 11 24H2,” it explained. “Please note that you may experience some performance issues while we work on a more permanent fix. As soon as it is ready, we will let you know.”
