Eager gamers hoping to fight for the Iron Throne might have to wait a little bit longer, as PlaySide’s Game of Thrones: War for Westeros has hit a small development snag.
Announced in a blog post on the official War for Westeros, the game, which was initially slated for a 2026 release, is being pushed into “early 2027.” This followed a lengthy breakdown of new gameplay updates and development progress. According to the post, “This decision gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for.”

The post highlights some of the factions players can choose from: House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or even the Night King’s Army of the Dead. Each house features iconic characters (the blog post describes them as Heroes, but if you know Game of Thrones, that feels generous) that can lead their armies into battle—each character has the ability to level up and gain new abilities to better lead their armies.
The team has also put a lot of work into emphasizing the visceral feel of battles and highlighting the emphasis on responsiveness, unit behaviour, and physical impact. Heavy units will barrel through enemies and withstand damage, so there’s a priority on “tactical counter-play” to turn the tide of battle. On top of this, a lot of care and effort has been placed in capturing the unique landscapes of Westeros, through maps that are well-known from the books and TV Series such as King’s Landing or The Wall.
The post also ends by saying, “We remain unwavering in our mission to deliver a real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros that meets the expectations of both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans.”
