Disney animated series from 1994, Gargoyles, has finally unveiled the writer and director for its upcoming live-action Disney+ adaptation, and they have roots firmly placed in horror.
Gargoyles is a popular animated series created by Greg Weisman that saw its original three-season run from 1994 to 1996 during the two-hour Disney Afternoon cartoon block on the Syndication network, with the final season airing on ABC in 1997. After many rumours and a remaster of the 1995 16-bit side-scrolling platformer for the Sega Genesis is literally right around the corner from release on October 19 to Steam, a live-action Gargoyles has been officially confirmed in a new report that reveals the writer and director for the project.
Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster banner have partnered up to bring Gargoyles to Disney+ in a live-action adaptation, with Dauberman receiving the writer, executive producer and showrunner labels, THR reports. Meanwhile, Atomic Monster is joining the executive producer ranks. Dauberman is best known for his screenwriting work on the Annabelle trilogy of films and the 2017 remake of It. With Dauberman’s experience working on horror films and the cult-classic animated series’ penchant for dark tones, it seems like an ideal match for the project to move forward.
Gargoyles is a series that saw mystical creatures from medieval Scotland — who were trapped in stone prisons for a thousand years — make their way to New York City. Each night, they reanimate and become vigilantes protecting the city against the night. The main conflict on the show is against time, as the mystical creatures themselves cannot face the sun. Tension would naturally occur due to the Gargoyles reverting to their statue form when it is daytime, reminiscent of their time trapped in Scotland.
While there isn’t much else known about the live-action project, the Gargoyles are set to rise again in live-action, assumably exclusively to Disney+.
