Dungeons & Dragons kicked Gen Con 2026 into high gear, announcing several well-loved settings are headed to the game over the next year—including an unlikely crossover with World of Warcraft.
The partnership between these two titans of fantasy gaming is part of an initiative that Wizards of the Coast is borrowing from its other major property, Magic: The Gathering. The Universes Beyond initiative makes its TTRPG debut on November 17 in D&D: World of Warcraft. This new Gameplay Expansion sourcebook was developed in conjunction with Blizzard Entertainment, and will allow Dungeons & Dragons players to relive adventures from across the MMORPG’s 22-year history.

D&D: World of Warcraft will be available as a standard rulebook in physical and digital formats on D&D Beyond. Physical copies offer a choice between the standard cover, a hobby store exclusive variant, or the premium Collector’s Edition, with a slipcover bearing the symbols of the Horde and the Alliance. Players can also look for a WoW-themed Dungeon Master Screen and the Icecrown Citadel Map Pack, which includes full-size poster maps, tokens, and a digital adventure—a veritable gauntlet taking players from levels 16 to 20 as they challenge a dozen high-level bosses.
The Gameplay Expansion book aims to cover as many bases of the MMORPG’s world as possible. 11 new species (along with specific lore for Azeroth’s elves and orcs) and 9 subclasses (3 new, including Death Knights, Demon Hunters, and Discipline Priests, and 6 updated) will allow players to transport their in-game avatar to the tabletop and the 5.5e ruleset. Familiar subclasses from World of Warcraft will be grafted into the Dungeons & Dragons 5.5E system. Jaina Proudmoore and other famous characters will be represented with proper stat blocks for use in adventures as well.

Though Dungeons & Dragons may be looking to other “Universes,” the classic realms will not be forgotten in the meantime. The beloved post-apocalyptic setting of Dark Sun returns in 2027 with a full suite of new material, such as the new Psion class. Intended for mature audiences, the new range will include a Setting Expansion, Gameplay Expansion, and a special limited-edition version of the main Player’s Handbook, as well as a map pack and Dungeon Master’s Screen.
Wizards of the Coast is also introducing a new creative program called D&D Icons, overseen by Joe Manganiello. Through this initiative, legendary names from Dungeons & Dragons history—such as Luke Gygax, son of the game’s creator Gary Gygax, and Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, creators of Dragonlance—will produce new content grounded in iconic settings.
First among these will be a new Greyhawk project, which Gygax is building from unfinished and previously unseen content originally penned by his father. Weiss and Hickman are similarly working on an extensive new Dragonlance sourcebook, while R.A. Salvatore will be bringing back the legendary ranger Drizzt Do’Urden.
Greyhawk will also be featured next year in a new adventure called Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen. Players will decide the plane’s fate and get caught up with two iconic characters: the vampiric Drelnza and her mother, Tasha, otherwise known as Iggwilv the Witch Queen.

Tasha has also been revealed as a character in the upcoming Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, where she will be portrayed by Maggie Robertson, the award-winning actress behind Resident Evil Village‘s Lady Dimitrescu. The first look at Warlock‘s gameplay, following its announcement at the 2025 Game Awards, will arrive later in August at gamescom.
Alongside all of this content, D&D Beyond’s mobile app will be receiving a considerable overhaul. The facelift is designed to improve in-person play, being built from the ground up to improve the interface and reduce the distractions of having tech at the table. A new Looking For Group feature will also help steer players toward local in-person events, to form online parties over Discord, or to find professional Dungeon Masters.

Lastly, Wizards of the Coast teased that Dungeons & Dragons will be partnering with Star Wars to take players to a galaxy far, far away in 2027. No further details were shared, bringing great disturbance to the Force, but the company has prior experience with Lucasarts, having produced the d20-based Star Wars Roleplaying Game from 2000-2010. This may be where the fun begins.
Based on their Gen Con presentation, Wizards of the Coast has paved quite an exciting road ahead for Dungeons & Dragons players new and old. In the meantime, the next sourcebooks, the Gameplay Expansion Arcana Unleashed and Adventure Expansion Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, will go on sale in September.
