Takashi Yamazaki the writer, director, and VFX supervisor of Godzilla Minus One, will once again be helming the next entry in Toho’s prolific franchise. The announcement comes just ahead of the North American re-release of Godzilla Minus One, with a remastered black-and-white rendition.
Announced on the official Godzilla account on X (formerly Twitter), no further details were given beyond Yamazaki’s involvement. We currently don’t have any idea if it could be a sequel to Minus One, a brand new story, or when the new film might be released. Godzilla does have a tradition of each film being its own standalone thing, as the one before Minus One was Shin Godzilla, directed by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno.
Minus One is the first Godzilla film Yamazaki has worked on, and some of his previous work includes directing Lupin III: The First, Dragon Quest: Your Story, and the live-action adaptions of both Space Battleship Yamato and Parasyte. His films have won eight Japanese Academy Awards, five Nikkan Sports Film Awards, and more.
Still, it’s an exciting prospect considering the absolute record-smashing success of Godzilla Minus One. After phenomenal reception from critics, Minu One became the third-highest-grossing foreign-language film in U.S. box office history, racking up $56.4 million domestically. When you include the global box office, however, that number rises to $115 million.
That’s no small feat no matter how you look at it, but astoundingly impressive when you consider the film was made on a budget of just $15 million. That makes Minus One the most successful entry in the franchise’s history, not counting the Hollywood Monster-Verse films. Past that, though, Godzilla Minus One won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, making it the first Godzilla film in history to win an Academy Award.
Godzilla Minus One is streaming on Netflix.
