To the surprise of everyone, the upcoming sequel to the Oscar-winning film of 2019 Joker: Folie à Deux has officially received an R-rating, citing “strong violence” and “brief nudity” as the culprits responsible.

After subsequently dropping a new poster teaser for the upcoming sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, the film has continued to build steam — literally and figuratively — by snagging an R-rating today. The news comes by way of the MPA Classification and Rating Administration, which has announced the rating of eight films, of which five were classified as R-ratings. The brief teaser poster revealed yesterday can be seen below, and it features Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in full character as the Clown Prince of Crime and Harley Quinn, respectively.

Joker: Folie à Deux earned an R-rating for “some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality and brief full nudity,” according to the MPA Rating Board. The sequel is helmed by the 2019 Director of the original, Todd Phillips, and stars Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan and Brendan Gleeson.

According to an exclusive from Variety, the film will adopt a more musical approach, where Phillips said the film will be “mostly a jukebox musical,” which integrates well-known music into the film’s scenes. According to Phillips, one of the songs set to be included in the film is “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical The Band Wagon. Joker: Folie à Deux will feature 15 reinterpretations of well-known songs.

While it’s anyone’s guess as to what other songs make it into the film, the original Joker from 2019 placed heavy emphasis on the Frank Sinatra classic, “That’s Life,” so we bet that one makes its way into the sequel in one way or another. Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to release on October 4.
