In a new interview, Margot Robbie reveals that other actresses should pick up the iconic mantle of Harley Quinn, and there’s so much that can be done with the character.

Harley Quinn is an iconic character that has played many roles in the DC Comics universe. Often, the comic relief as seen in the Batman: The Animated Series, or a character with real depth like the version fans see in the Harley Quinn animated series, or even a blend of both. This is the version Margot Robbie brought to filming when she took over the role in the live-action Suicide Squad, its sequel, and the Birds of Prey film.

Harley Quinn is one of the most decorated DC characters for good reason with the depth she brings to each scene, and in a new interview with Variety, Margot Robbie says she thinks others should play the character. Robbie explained, “I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters.”

Robbie continues, saying, “Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, “What are they going to do with her?” regarding the many directions the character can go in. While Margot Robbie did not answer whether or not she has retired from the role, her hope for the character is to see others put their spin on the character.

Seeing as how Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the latest The Flash film featured different versions of Batman and Spider-Man from different movie universes they’ve appeared in, Robbie is right when she says, “The options are endless.” Harley Quinn’s next appearance is the Todd Phillips follow-up to 2019’s Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux, and Harley Quinn will be portrayed by Lady Gaga. The options are already endless.
