Magic: the Gathering Unveils Duskmourn: House of Horror & Foundations at MagicCon: Amsterdam

Magic: The Gathering has uncorked a wealth of new information on the opening day of MagicCon: Amsterdam, giving fans a fresh look at new sets and a world premiere announcement of Foundations.

On the opening day of MagicCon: Amsterdam, Magic: the Gathering has erupted with a wealth of new information regarding upcoming sets, Japan Showcase artwork, the Duskmourn: House of Horrors set release date being moved up, a returning format called Archenemy, and a brand new format called Foundations.

Magic: The Gathering – Duskmourn & Japan Showcase artwork

First off, MTG revealed stunning Japan Showcase cards to start launching in booster packs with the new Duskmourn: House of Horrors set. Like previous special artworks (and showcases), these will be sought by collectors and will have a lower ‘pull rate’ than the normal card treatments. The Japanese Showcase cards will feature card art from Japanese artists and illustrators to pay homage to globally beloved art styles found in Japanese hobby stores. As a last caveat, these special art designs will only be made available in collector’s booster packs.

Duskmourn features a brand new plane, called Duskmourn, inspired by the genre of modern horror from the 1980s until now. The plane functions as an “infinite haunted house” and will feature horrific card art and contemporary horror consistent with what fans can find in old scary movies.

The Magic: The Gathering Duskmourn: House of Horrors set will also feature SPG (Special Guests), which are re-released cards very much like Lost Caverns of Ixalan‘s Mana Crypt, with brand new artwork. As a final addition, the Duskmourn: House of Horrors expansion commander decks will come equipped with a returning format from 2017, Archenemy.

Archenemy mechanics are present in each Duskmourn Commander pre-con and contain their own deck of scheme cards, letting anyone take on the role of the archenemy. This game mode lets three players take on one that plays the villain, and powerful scheme cards are meant to level the playing field. Pre-orders are available for Duskmourn: House of Horrors starting today for the launch on September 27.

Magic: the Gathering – Foundations

In other surprising news, Magic: The Gathering has a secret set hidden from fans, and they’ve dragged it into the light. When asked, ‘What if Magic: The Gathering was a set?’ Wizards of the Coast answered with Foundations. Foundations feature new and old cards that elevate the Standard meta to a new level. Boasting the set is “filled with cards legal in Standard, at least until 2029!” Foundations features powerful returning cards such as Omniscience which is currently unplayable in Standard, and new cards such as the revealed “Anthem of Champions” that gifts a +1 +1 to all creatures you control.

Magic: The Gathering will share more information about this upcoming set at a later date before the official release on November 15.

That wraps up all the new information released during the MagicCon: Amsterdam opening day. Fans can head to the Wizards of the Coast website for more information.
