It has been nearly 20 years since Mean Girls was released and almost instantly reached cult-classic status, and to celebrate Mean Girls Day this October 3rd has brought the film to TikTok.
To the uninitiated, the reason October 3rd is considered Mean Girls Day is due to the mention of the date in a small scene in the popular 2004 film. In the scene, the character Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett) turns back to the main protagonist Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan), in their classroom and asks what day it is. After Cady answers “It’s October 3rd” the day has been officially claimed by the huge fandom.
To celebrate the Holiday, the film’s social media accounts have gone all in on posting about the film. On the official X (formerly Twitter) account, the post to celebrate Mean Girls Day says, “Ok, you should just know that we don’t do this a lot so this is like a really huge deal” before revealing that the entire film has gone live on TikTok in a slew of 23 parts. That’s not all, the ParamountPics TikTok account has also revealed that there will be an official live watch party today that starts at 7:00 p.m. EST, and the account has changed its main tagline to “you CAN sit with us” as a cheeky reference to an iconic scene in the film.
Mean Girls Day takes it one step further and has announced the musical will be heading to theatres as well. On January 12, 2024, Mean Girls (the musical) will hit theatres. Fans can rest assured ticketing information will be made available at a later date. The musical is Executive Produced by Jeff Richmond, Nell Benjamin, Eric Gurian, Erin David, and Pamela Thur, with Producers Lorne Michaels and Tina Fey on board. The musical stars Angourie Rice, Auli’i Cravalho, Reneé Rapp, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, Bebe Wood, Christopher Briney, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, with Tina Fey, with Tim Meadows.
