Mojang and Microsoft unveil Minecraft Dungeons 2 at Minecraft Live 2026, offering a first look at the sequel game.
The block-pixel dungeon crawler returns, opening up new adventures. This weekend, Minecraft Live 2026 announced Minecraft Dungeons 2, a sequel to the beloved Minecraft Dungeons. Mojang and Microsoft dropped an official announcement trailer shortly after the presentation. The game is available to wishlist on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Players can expect new locations, encounters, and loot.
“In a land once plagued by great evil, brave heroes took up arms and triumphed against the terror. With peace restored, all was well. Until it wasn’t…” The Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer narrator said. Visually, the trailer showed off the peaceful villagers and beautiful weather. However, it cuts to everything on fire and a cracked stone table, as the camera quickly pans and travels fast and deep underground. Then, it revealed the dungeon below, leading into the splash title reveal to end the trailer.
“This is an all-new action-RPG adventure where you’ll take on high-stakes encounters, thrilling challenges, and explore never-before-seen locations in the Minecraft universe,” an announcement reads. “Disorder is brewing, and the world stands before a threat unlike any other. A new danger is growing in power, ready to descend upon the land and unleash mayhem… Will you and your allies prevail against the forces of evil and save the day once more?”
The trailer description promised, “an all-new action RPG adventure, brimming with high-stakes encounters, thrilling challenges, and never-before-seen locations, as [players] set out to save a world in crisis.” Minecraft Dungeons originally came out on May 26, 2020, with an arcade edition that released a year later. The game is currently still at a 70 on Metacritic, with critics finding its fun and charm through its cohesive visuals and music. However, some found the story mode short and sparse. The game was nominated for the category of Best Family Game at The Game Awards 2020.
The last major update to the first game was back on November 22, with version 1.17. The Hidden Depths DLC was the last major update for the game. Mojang officially announced the end of development on September 28, 2023, at which point the game had reached 25 million players across all platforms. Minecraft Dungeons 2 was announced, as Mojang followed up with their plans to build a Minecraft theme park world at the UK’s Chessington World of Adventures.
