It has been a long 14 years since Minecraft first launched, and it has taken the world by storm since then, with millions of players and thousands of streamers; now, fans finally have a confirmed film with Jack Black and Jason Momoa starring.
It feels like fans have been on the cusp of an “almost” Minecraft movie for years (which makes sense, considering it’s the best-selling game of all time), and now that we have an official casting confirmation, the news has been pouring in. Aside from the previous casting confirmation of Jason Momoa in 2022, the film has now tapped Jack Black – fresh off another video game movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie – to play the titular character, Steve, in the film. While Jason Momoa’s character is a mystery, so is the overarching plot, as most of the story beats are being kept under wraps for now.
Considering the report of Jack Black’s casting comes from a scoop out of Deadline, Jack Black himself has added fuel to the fire, posting an image on his official Instagram page (with over 11 million followers) of himself reading a ‘Minecraft Basics for Dummies’ tome, which correlates directly with how the character Steve possibly started his Minecraft journey back in 2009. The fun image can be seen below directly from Jack Black’s social page.
The Minecraft movie is slated for 2025, and its confirmed casting choices are Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen to play characters, including new characters ‘Dawn and Henry,’ which Brooks and Hansen are reportedly playing. Jason Momoa’s role is unconfirmed so far, but producers include Momoa, Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Torfi Frans Olafsson, and Vu Bui, with Executive Producers Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza and Jonathan Spaihts.
The Minecraft film will be directed by Jared Hess, who previously worked with Jack Black on Nacho Libre, and the film is shaping up to have a star-studded cast. Jack Black was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for his work on The Super Mario Bros. Movie, particularly for the song ‘Peaches’ which he co-wrote.
The chances of Minecraft not having some kind of musical influence are almost zero, considering Black has almost exclusively worked on films that contain music in one way or another. From musical numbers in the Kung Fu Panda series of films to School of Rock and Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny, Minecraft will likely have music and sing-alongs.
While speculation is always fun, until official announcements are made regarding the upcoming Minecraft film, news should be taken with a grain of salt, especially because Warner Bros. appears to have everything under tight lock and key for the time being.
