Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Announced, Takes Place During a New Hypothetical Korean War

Infinity Ward and Activision Blizzard have officially announced this year’s annual Call of Duty title as Modern Warfare 4 (not to be confused with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare). The new entry will launch on October 23, 2026.

This latest entry is apparently seen as the start of a “new chapter,” according to Infinity Ward and puts the franchise in the midst of a new hypothetical future war, a global conflict centred on the Korean Peninsula.

On the official website, it says the campaign will take Call of Duty into “darker and more dangerous territory,” taking players into trench warfare in the heart of Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, adrenaline-pumping chases through Paris, and more. Here’s the official description of Modern Warfare 4’s story.

“War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion that threatens to destabilize the world in Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 4. A young squad of South Korean soldiers fights to survive on the collapsing front lines, while half a world away a vengeful Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows as he stays one step ahead of those hunting him. As Price’s off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, the war spreads beyond anyone’s control.”

Loads of details were also shared on the game’s multiplayer, maps, PC optimization, and more, via an official blog. The movement system in Modern Warfare 4 is built around the idea of “fluidity and control,” intended to feel seamless and responsive when you take actions like mantling, climbing, hanging, or jumping. At the same time, the ballistic systems behind the game’s weapons have been altered as well. Here are the highlights.

  • Bloom has been removed, making hipfire shots feel more direct, predictable, and connected to where the weapon is pointed.
  • Recoil, convergence, and weapon handling have been rebuilt to more directly reflect player input.
  • Depth of field and visual effects have been refined to improve enemy visibility without sacrificing authenticity.
  • Weapons respond more naturally to player movement, stance changes, and the environment, creating more consistent behavior in every engagement.

There’s also a new 3vs3 or 10vs10 mode called Kill Block, where the combat space reconfigures itself between rounds. “Shaped from a set of purpose-built modular sections capable of creating more than 500 distinct configurations, each match creates its own combat rhythm and tactical challenges. Expect more sections and even more configurations during Modern Warfare 4’s live seasons,” says the blog.

It’s also important to note that with the launch of Modern Warfare 4 and Season 1 of multiplayer, Call of Duty: Warzone will no longer be supported on PS4 and Xbox One. You can see even more details on the official site, and more updates will be coming in the near future.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
