Mortal Shell 2’s open beta has officially gone live on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, giving console players the chance to join Steam players in the dark, dystopian world.
If you’re hoping to join the open beta, simply head to the respective page on either PlayStation or Xbox and download the beta. Then just open it up, follow the steps, and you should be good to go.
A follow-up to the original Soulslike released in 2020, Mortal Shell 2 pushes some of the game’s unique concepts even further — namely your ability to possess different warriors’ “shells” that all have wildly different skills, and their own stories. Here’s the official description from the game’s Steam page.
“Mortal Shell II is a standalone sequel to Mortal Shell that significantly expands on the original with unrestricted, adrenaline-charged combat, deeper weapon design with extensive upgrade options, and an emphasis on free exploration.
This action-RPG offers an immersive, interconnected open world, expansive yet deliberately compact, designed to unfold its twisted landscapes and hidden structures while respecting the player’s time.”
And here’s an overview of the game’s key features,
- No Restraints – Adrenaline-charged, high-stakes combat (both melee and ranged). Unrestricted by stamina, players can exploit multiple tactics to shatter enemy posture and strike critically.
- Expanded Shells – Awaken and inhabit new and returning Shells, each with unique innate abilities and hidden histories.
- Standalone Story – A fully self-contained sequel—no prior knowledge of Mortal Shell required.
- Compact Open World – A handcrafted, interconnected open world with over 60+ dungeons, all designed to respect the player’s time.
The open beta lets players go through roughly the first three hours of the game, and progress will, sort of, carry over to the full game. Anyone who completes the open beta will be able to skip the prologue in the full game, but items, skills, etc will be reset. Additionally, playing the open beta will unlock an exclusive cosmetic called the “Flayed Harbinger.”
Mortal Shell 2 launches on August 20 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
