Earth's Mightiest Heroes!

Marvel Super Heroes Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes — New Mechanics, Heroes & Where To Find Them!

Since its big reveal way back in 2023, Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes has been teasing fans leading up to release, and today, WOTC revealed all the details.

Now that Secrets of Strixhaven is in the rearview mirror, Wizards of the Coast has set its sights on the future and towards more heroic ambition. As 2026 marches onwards, Wizards of the Coast continues to generate unseen excitement for Magic: The Gathering. While the Universes Beyond – Final Fantasy set is the best-selling set of all time, and Secrets of Strixhaven has just been announced as the best-selling in-universe set ever (and this is after Lorwyn: Eclipsed already accepted the honours for that just months prior), WOTC looks to the heroic future Universes Beyond set, Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes.

Like every other main set release, MTG | Marvel Super Heroes introduces new (and returning) mechanics to the tabletops of Magic: The Gathering. While previous set spoiler seasons have given fans a taste of what the bonus sheet would look like, WOTC’s reveal today is all Heroes, Villains and the mighty mechanics they can deploy to keep the universe safe (or doom it to destruction).

Magic: The Gathering – New & Returning Mechanics in Marvel Super Heroes

Heroes and Villains return! – Following the trend from the Secret Lair heroes release, and Magic: The Gathering Universe’s Beyond Spider-Man (and probably the worst-kept secret of the set), Heroes and Villains are returning as designated creature types in Marvel Super Heroes. Which means the set is chock full of Marvel’s greatest and worst, and a lot of synergy for both types is found in the set.

Power-up – Pay this much to unleash your hero/villain’s super power. This is a one-time effect similar to exhaust from Aetherdrift. The Power-up cost is reduced by the creature’s total mana cost if the ability is activated in the same turn the card is played. In Captain Marvel, Earth’s Protector, the Power-up costs two white mana and three colourless mana less to activate if she is played the same turn this ability is activated. Otherwise, it costs a full seven.

Worthy – We knew this one was coming since the set was announced. Worthy belongs to the card Mjolnir, Hammer of Thor, and in Marvel’s history, only a few Worthy Heroes were able to hoist the weapon throughout the ages. In Marvel, who’s Worthy to wield Mjolnir is limited to very few (looking at you, Captain America), but in magic, as long as you are a red or a white creature and you are not a Villain, you can hoist the mighty Mjolnir.

Teamwork X – As an additional cost to cast the spell that has this keyword, a player may tap any number of creatures whose power is X or more to achieve an additional effect. In HULK SMASH! Using Teamwork 4 allows the player to activate both abilities instead of choosing one.

Plans – This is a new enchantment type that sends players on a quest for a mighty reward. Doom Reigns Supreme nets a plan counter whenever a Villain enters, and when the fifth counter is accrued, you can sacrifice the enchantment to steal opponents’ spells and turn the tables like a true villain! Other cards like The Masters of Evil give this new type synergy, allowing players to search them out.

Connive – A returning mechanic from Magic: The Gathering Spider-Man. Connive activates when designated, and when it does, the player can discard a card and then draw a card. If they do, and the card discarded was a non-land card, the creature that connives gets a +1/+1 counter.

Sneak – Returning from Magic: The Gathering Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sneak is an updated form of Ninjutsu and allows players to cast a spell for their Sneak cost when an unblocked creature is also returned to that player’s hand at the same time as the spell is played.

Improvise – Another returning mechanic that allows players to tap their artifacts instead of lands for mana to help cast a spell with Improvise. Each artifact you tap counts for 1 mana produced.

Sagas – This enchantment type is returning in Universe’s Beyond Marvel Super Heroes, and it’s bringing some heroic and not-so-heroic connotations to the tabletop. Sagas activate on each player’s upkeep and serve as a way to tell a story or legend. This card type was last seen in Avatar: The Last Airbender. On each upkeep, Sagas get a Lore Counter, and on each step of the Saga, you must do the effect that is told for that step. In The Coming of Galactus, on the final step, The Devourer of Worlds himself comes into play.

Transforming Modal Cards – Returning from Spider-Man, these heroic (and villainous) card types portray the hero or villain, as well as their alter egos before they obtained their powers, or when they’re not out saving the world. For Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, their front-facing side is both Blue in identity, and they serve as weak human creatures with powerful effects. You can transform these humans into their heroic sides, or cast them as the hero variant, but the hero can’t transform back into the human unless it leaves the battlefield. These card types portray both sides of the vigilante duality, without needing two cards to do so.

Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes – Special Card Treatments And Where To Find Them!

Magic: The Gathering did not hold back on collectibility with the Marvel Super Heroes Universe’s Beyond set. There is a swath of collectible art treatments to consider when picking up any of the products, and they’ve pulled out all of the stops with Marvel Super Heroes.

Like the rest of Universe’s Beyond (starting with MTG Final Fantasy Through The Ages), the Source Material bonus sheet will adapt artwork from the annals of Marvel history and slot this artwork into the frame of a borderless Magic: The Gathering card, complete on a strong reprint like Simulacrum Synthesizer. It’s worth mentioning that Marvel Super Heroes is getting Jumpstart Boosters (like Avatar: The Last Airbender) and a regular Gift Bundle this time around, instead of a specialized Gift Bundle (like the Codex Bundle from Secrets of Strixhaven or the Pizza Bundle from TMNT).

Unlike the staggering amount of card treatments seen in TMNT, Marvel Super Heroes keeps things relatively simpler, dropping the Japanese cracked ice treatments seen first in Foundations and Duskmourn: House of Horrors. Instead, the Borderless Logo Treatment can be seen on Mythic printings, like Wolverine, showcasing the character’s bestial nature, and the iconic design that made him a household name for decades.

Showcase panel frames borrow a similar style from Universes Beyond Spider-Man, using Comic Sans font, and eye-catching visuals portraying the heroic origins of Marvel. Of course, lastly, Iconic Cover Treatments can be found showcasing the Heroic deeds or Villainous acts of the character straddling the cover. Below, a nifty table shows where collectors may find all of the treatments.
