Searchlight Pictures has released the final trailer for Nightmare Alley, the noir-thriller directed by Guillermo Del Toro, which hits theatres on December 17, 2021.
The trailer gives us the best look yet at the mind-bending world, as things seemingly become more and more unhinged. In Nightmare Alley, Bradley Cooper plays a carny that has a talent for manipulating people. The trailer shows Cooper taking a lie detector test, interspersed with him getting into trouble with a variety of characters, including the bewitching psychiatrist played by Kate Blanchet.
Here’s the official description of Nightmare Alley via a press release,
“When charismatic but down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena (Tina Collette) and her has-been mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a travelling carnival, he crafts a golden ticket to success, using this newly acquired knowledge to grift the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society. With the virtuous Molly (Rooney Mara) loyally by his side, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who might be his most formidable opponent yet.”
Nightmare Alley has a star-studded cast that, apart from those listed above, also includes Willem Dafoe, Ron Perlman, Clifton Collins Jr., Mary Steenburgen, and Holt McCallany. The film is based on a novel by William Lindsay Gresham.
This is Guillermo Del Toro’s first film as director since 2017’s The Shape of Water, which went on to win Best Picture as the Oscars. Del Toro has easily become one of the most prolific directors of recent years, also working on films like Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, and Pacific Rim.
Del Toro has a number of other projects currently in production, including a stop-motion musical adaption of Pinocchio. Netflix also announced in September that Del Toro would be working on a new horror anthology series called Cabinet of Curiosities.
