Overwatch 2 Animated Mini-Series’ First Episode Available Now

GENESIS – PART ONE: DAWN

Blizzard Entertainment’s first episode of its Overwatch 2 animated mini-series, Genesis, is available now on YouTube for fans to jump into, which focuses on the earliest days of Overwatch.

As Overwatch 2 waits for its next new hero to be playable for the masses sometime in August, Blizzard Entertainment has debuted its newest spin-off from the ever-popular hero shooter with Genesis. It is an animated mini-series taking the story of Overwatch back to its roots, detailing how things came to be in the video game, as well as the people who were responsible for the Omnic Crisis, which was a rebellion by the Omnics against their human creators.

The first episode is titled Dawn and appears to potentially be a reference to that new hero coming later this year, as game director Aaron Keller recently teased in an update that was perhaps coincidentally called “The Dawn of a New Hero.” This 38th hero in Overwatch 2 appears to have powers drawn from the sun, which could mean quite literally anything is on the table for how this new combatant could operate or what skills they might possess.

Regardless of whether or not there are any hidden messages about future updates to the main game, the mini-series looks to tell an interesting story for those wanting to know more about the lore of Overwatch 2, which gives the backstory on Omnica Corporation scientist Dr. Mina Liao, the creator of Echo. After co-founding Overwatch and fighting alongside favourites like Jack Morrison (Soldier: 76), Gabriel Reyes (Reaper), and more, she is killed by her own creations prior to the events of the Overwatch games, meaning there’s a ton of backstory for fans to learn.

With that being said, make sure to check out the new episode now on the PlayOverwatch YouTube channel, and keep up with the second episode on July 13th and the third episode on July 20th, as the team gets into the Omnic Storyline—showcasing how the initial formation of Overwatch came to be! With Blizzard’s history of turning their intellectual property into additional forms of content, like this mini-series, it’s hard telling what other stories we could get in the future from the Overwatch series, but surely more is on the way.
